THE NELSON COAL MINE,- ■
(To the Editor of the Grey Biver Argus. J Sir,—Your repeated .complaints of ' the ineffiqient mariner in which the Kelson mine is being worked do not appear to haye/ exertett any effect on the sleeping Company thatso cleveriy succeeded in. getting the lease from the Nelson Government, under promises and conditions which appear, to have no prospect of beijig fulfilled. It was said that Batty was ousted by the Government, because it was against the interests of the public that the mine should be in the hauds of holders whose want of capital made them .able only to "potter away at the coal;" but, Sir, I appeal to you and your readers if anything- could exceed the " pottering" manner in which the present Company is -working the mine, I know this, that the miserable slowness hj the production of coal for shipment is highly detrimental to the commercial interests of the port.' The time wasted by vessels for a few tons of coal, almost eats up the amount of freight j in fact, there is no encouragement whatever given to the coal trade, the Company appearing only to care to take advantage of the necessities of the few craft engaged -in the trade. Surety' the Government will not. allow this unsatis-. factory state- of tilings to cqntinue; they ought most stringently to compel theiullil-' ment of the conditions "under wliich the lease was granted, or hand, over the mine to a more spirited company, lam, &c, ;: /Carbon.
