Wednesday, July 25. (Before W, H. Revell, Esq., R.M.) •Using Obscene Language. — Margaret Mills was charged > with using obscene language to one Mary Buggy, and fined 20s. ■ Alleged Assault.— Thomas Gourlay was charged by John Harris with having committed an assault upon him, by" having* illegally taken the plaintiff into custody:" The particulars of the case «were rather singular. It appears that about three weeks ago the defendant, who is bailiff of the Resident Magistrate's - Court at Greymouth, isceived a warrant from Dunedin against' the plaintiff,, which he proceeded to execute, but was induced by the representations of the plaintiff to take the money by -histahneuts and not to arrest him. . Plaintiff/paid portions of the amount, andson being askedfor the balance remaining "He refused to pay On this the defendant arrested..the -plaintiff, and took him to the gaol, but the plaintiff tnen paid the money. The plaintiff now asserted that the defendant had arrested hini illegally, as he did not produce his warrant at the time. " The plaintiff called two witness, Henry N,athan and a. polioe constable, >• who witnessed the" arrest/ but then- evidence proved.^ that the bailiff diily produced the warrant and showed it to the plaintiff. The Magistrate dismissed the case with costs.
