The Auckland papers contain accounts of several cases of sticking-up. The "New Zealand Herald " of the 2nd says .:—"Yesterday evening, at' half-past six o'clock, as a Mr Robert Clifford was walking up Hobson street, he was suddenly pounced upon by a determined ruffian, and struck on the back of lv's head by some heavy weapon. The blow, which was no doubt intended for the top of his head, fell more upon the back of the neck, and though it inflicted a severe cut, ' did not stupify Clifford', who was sent sprawling forward on his hands and knees, severely cutting them on the scoria. He quickly regained his feet, shouting aloud for help as he did so, and his assailant at once took to his heels. In the fall the glass of a valuable gold watch, contained in Ins waistcoat pocket, was smashed to pieces, and the piece had stopped at the moment of the assault — 26 minutes after, 6 o'clock. • The object of the thief was doubtless to have stunned his victim with the first blow. Persons travelling after dark would do well to carry arms, and to allow none, to approach them closely."
