UNDERGROUND VERSUS SURFACE DRAINAGE. Wm. Henry Orchard, licensee of Collins I Hotel, Christchurch, was charged, on f information of B. Leahy, inspector of if nusiances, with allowing a nuisance to ■ .exist on his premises and which turtiicr !, extended to the side channel opposite to bis premises. Mr Garrick appeared for the prosecution on behalf of the Local Boaid of Health. The cause of complaint was an open wooden box drain, which is used to convey all house slops, &c., to the side channel, the whole of this apparatus (according to the information) had become offensive, and a Notice in due form had been served on defendant requiring him to abate the nuisance either by ceasing to deposit the offensive matter in the drain, or by providing water sufficient to flush it so to hasp it and the side channel clean. The . notice contained a foot note suggesting that an effectual remedy would be connect- • ing the house with the deep drain which is k close by.
