COMMERCIAL.

The Customs duties collected at rhristchurch on Saturday, December 23rd, were as follows:—Spirits, .£l2 3s 3d; wine, .£23 15s; sugar, .£4 14s 7d; goods by weight, .£43 3s 3d; ad valorem, .£lB6 13s; other duties, .£56 10s lid. Total, £204 16s Id. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET This Day. The effect of the holidays was everywhere perceivable in the yards this morning, very little being sent forward, and little inclination shown on the part of those who attended to buy. Fat sheep—The small number to hand were made up of some very excellent quality. Very little was required by the trade, that little they obtained at late rates —say an average of lid per lb; crossbreds selling at from 10s to 13s 3d. The store sheep sent forward met with a dull market. One line of shorn crossbred hoggets was sold at 7s 3d, but the greater part did not reach owners' reserves. Fat lambs were again in plentiful supply; late high rates were not sustained, ruling prices being 6s to 7s 6d. Fat cattle—A fair supply, but little business. Sales effected at late rates, an average of 20s per lOOlbs, but many were turned out unsold. Store cattle—A small supply, and next to no business done. GRAIN AND PRODUCE, Business in the grain market continues quiet, and must remain so for another six or seven weeks. A line of wheat has been sold for export, but the price has not transpired. For ordinary farmers' lots, of which but few are offering, 3s 9d appears to be about present value. Flour is still quiet, and only saleable in semi-retail lots, at £lO. Oats offer in small parcels, and sell at 2s 9d to 3s, according to quality, for town use; for export there is no inquiry. Barley is seldom offered. Ryegrass seed and cocksfoot are occasionally offered for forward delivery, but buyers and sellers appear to have different views of value. Butter still moves off at 9d per lb, and is not likely to be lower this season. New cheese is offering freely at 6d, but the weather is too warm for buyers to take it into stock. Hams and bacon are in fair trade demand at late xates.
