RECEPTION TO SIR JULIUS VOGEL.
Sir Julius Vogel will, it appears, arrive in Christchurch on Tuesday next, and leave on Thursday. Wednesday, consequently, is the only day on which he could be entertained by those wishing to give him a hearty reception. The opening of the dock in Lyttelton being fixed for that day, it has struck those gentlemen who had intended to give a banquet to Sir Julius, that it would not be desirable that the two events should clash, and that the luncheon given by the Harbor Board would give the best possible opportunity to Sir Julius of meeting his numerous friends, as a very large number of persons have accepted invitations to it. Correspondence by telegraph has been going on between Mr. Mitchell, hon. sec. to the Reception Committee and Sir Julius, and the result has been that the position has been explained to Sir Julius, and he has been informed that the committee are of opinion that, taking all the facts of the case into consideration, they think that their wish that he should be heartily received would be best met with by his meeting his friends at the Harbor Board luncheon, and that the banquet stand over.
