The subscriptions for the widows and orphans of the miners who lost their lives at Creswick now amounts to £16,750. Received December 23rd, 0.50 a.m. MELBOUKNE, December 22. A freßh outbreak of water occurred today in the Australasian mine at Creswick. Six men who were at work underground at the time escaped somehow with considerable difficulty. SYDNEY, December 22. A party of astronomers wh» were stationed at Lord Howe Island, off the coast of the country, arrived here to-day They did not succeed in their intended observations of the transit of Venus. Received December 22nd, 11 a.m. SYDNEY, December 21. New Zealand wheat has advanced during the week to 7s sd, and New Zealand oats to 3s 6d j maize remains at 5s per GOlbs, and Sugar Company's No. 1 pieces remain at £35 per ton. Keceived December 22nd, 11 a.m. ADELAIDE, December 21. Wheat continues quiet at 4s lOd. Town flour is quoted at £ll ss, being a decline of 15s during the week. Country brands £lO sj§ a decline of 20s. Freights to the United Kingdom from Adelaide are 35s to 375. Freights for wool, greasy, fd, scoured gd per lb. The freight market is weaker.
