CORN EXCHANGE.

A special meeting of the Corn Exchange ■was held this afternoon at half-past two o'clock, for the purpose of considering the advisability of carrying on the institution. Present —Mr W. D. Peryman (chairman) Mesrrs W. McLaren, Gammock, M'Beath, Eagleson, Jenkins, Hancock, Henderson, Bruce, Mathias, Bailey and Herrick. The chairman stated that of twenty papers sent out with the object of securing subscribers, only two as yet had been returned. However, theie were fifty-three msmbers who could be relied JJupon, and of his own knowledge 100 members could be secured, provided they continued to hold the rooms on the same terms as hitherto. Last year there were 146 members. About .£2OO was made last year by commissions. j 875 had been received for rent, and there •was £25 to come in. The total receipts j£ ils 13s 3d up to a fortnight ago. Mr Bruce said he and Mr Henderson had seen Mr Matson with regard to the occupancy of the rooms, and he would be unable to give an answer until next Thursday, as certain matters were pending which might necessitate an alteration in the arrangements.

Mr Bailey thought that under the circumstances there was no alternative but to adjourn the meeting until next Saturday. The chairman said he would have a statement prepared by next meeting with regard to carrying on the Exchange on some other basis, and which would also deal with the question of obtaining land and erecting buildings of their own. On the motion of Mr Bruce, seconded by Mr Mcßeath, the meeting adjourned until Saturday next at the same hour and place.
