[per press association]. AUCKLAND, December 22. The City Council yesternight raised the "Mayor’s salary from £250 to £4OO, the town clerk’s salary was increased to £SOO, and the engineer’s to £6OO.
Six hundred bushmen arrived here yesterday for the holidays. WANGANUI, December 22. The Hon. Mr Eolleston left for Wellington by train last evening. Mr Bryce remains to spend Christmas with his family. Mr J. S. Holdsworth, Crown Lands Commissioner, held a sale to-day of the Tokomairu Block and Harbor Board Endowment Block on deferred and cash payments. Of seventy-five sections offered, eleven were sold for deferred payments. Not much interest was taken in the sale. The land realised on an average about 35s per acre. "WELLINGTON, December 22. James Smith, licensee of the Prince of Wales’ Hotel, was to-day fined 20s and costs for refusing admittance to the police on Saturday night after hours. The regatta committee has fixed the first prize for the Coasters’ Race at £4O and the cup, and the second prize at £lO. The prizes in the first-class yacht races are for the same amounts. On arrival of the Wakatipuhere on Wednesday, Captain Wheeler gave a steerage passenger into custody for stealing a small quantity of fruit from one of the • cases stored on the deck. The Bench sentenced the prisoner to forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, and hoped this would act as a warning to others who travel. The Lady Jocelyn, ship, from London, is .at the heads.
