RAILWAY RETURNS.
[from our correspondent.] WELLINGTON, December 15,
During the first thirty-two (32) weeks of the current financial year the New Zealand Railways have yielded a gross receipt of .£503,379 as against £523,625 for the Corresponding period of last year, but the working expenses will absorb 66 per cent., instead of 59, so the net profit is only £196,907, instead of £209,653, the falling off being nearly £19,000. The Wellington section shows increased profits by nearly thousands, andmineral lines still show well, but others all exhibit retrogression, excepting Napier, which is stationary. HurunuiBluff is again amongst the worst offenders. It has an increase of £2 17s per mile on the gross receipts, but the working expenses are augmented by fifty-five pounds thirteen shillings (£55 13s) per mile, and the nett profit shows a diminution by eighteen thousand five hundred (£18,500). The falling off is not due to any deficiency in the traffic, for there is a substantial increase both in the passenger and goods traffic.
