FIRE NEAR KAIAPOI.
On Friday night at 11.30 a fire was discovered in the dwelling-house of Mr John Byron, ‘lOhoka road, and before seen it had a full hold of the house which was entirely of timber. Prom its isolated position aud distance from the fire station the hell was not sounded. In about twenty minutes the whole tenement was a heap of embers. How the fire occurred is a mystery. Mr Byron, who is single, had left it that evening for a few days, asking a neighbor named McFall to see that all was right till his return. Another near resident stated that he had passed the house at 9 p.m., and saw no light in it. The fire, to those who first saw it, had obtained hold of a lean-to, the room furthest away from the chimney. There was only one chimney, namely, in Mr Byron’s bootmaking room. The house was insured for £7o, the furniture for £2o in the United Fire Office. What the owner’s loss was could not bo ascertained, owing to his absence. As a high wind was springing up the local agent of the South British Company employed a man to see that no further damage was done by the fire spreading over Mr Byron’s garden and fences, and so on to adjoining houses.
