LICENSING COMMITTEES.
CHEISTCHUECH WEST. There was no business before the Committee for Christchurch west yesterday, and, therefore, the meeting was not held. HEATHCOTE. The Licensing Commissioners for the Heathcote district met at the Eoad Board office. Ferry road, at noon this day. Present—Messrs H. A. Bamford (chairman), G. Booth and T. York. The only business was an application for transfer of licence of the Heathcote Arms Hotel from Eoberfc Fenton to Edward George. The police report being satisfactory, the transfer was granted, the applicant being reminded that he had failed to display in a conspicuous place the notification ‘that the spirits sold were reduced. KIEWEE.
The quarterly meeting of the LicensingCommissioners for the Kirwce district took place at Kirwee on Tuesday, Dec. sth. Present—Messrs Mathias (chairman), McClelland, Gough, Anson and Frere. The police reported satisfactorily on the West Melton and Halfway Hotels, but with regard to the Kirwee Hotel, the Inspector said the licensee had not complied with the order of the Bench given last meeting, viz.—to transfer the premises within three months, and had made no application to do so. The Bench, under these circumstances, decided to allow Mr Franks one month longer to transfer his license before any further steps were taken. OXFOED. The Committee met at noon on Wednesday, in the Court House. Present—Messrs E. L. Higgins (chairman), Gorton, Luers, and Nalder.
John Fisher, W. Paget, J. Hall, and S. Love applied for extension to 11 o’clock. Mr Watson, who appeared for the applicants, explained the inconvenience of the ten o’clock licenses, and asked, in the behalf of his clients, that the Committee would relieve them of the liability, under the 124th section, of keeping a light burning after twelve o’clock. He called the Arch Druid and secretary to speak of the inconvenience complained of by the members of the lodge who came from a distance at not being able to get some refreshment after leaving the lodge, and the business was often interfered with by members who had come from a distance, leaving the lodge to obtain it before the houses are closed. The Bench retired to consider their decision, and on resuming the Chairman saidL that they had taken a great deal of trouble in arriving at a conclusion, and were unanimous in deciding that it would not be beneficial to the majority of the inhabitants of the district, and therefore declined, to grant the extension to 11 p.m. With regard to keeping the light burning, that was a sign of the house, and was a guide to travellers, whom they were obliged to take in, and was the principal reason for the granting of licenses, and not for the convenience of those who lived in the immediate vicinity. They could make no concession in this matter.
The police reports were read and considered satisfactory. The Committee then, ad j ourned.
