CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
A meeting of the committee of the Caledonian Society was held yesterday at 5 p.m., in the rooms of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Present—Mr P. Cunningham (in the chair), Messrs H. A. Watt, J. S. Guthrie, R. Sutherland, H. A. C. Ferguson, A. C. Wilson, W. F. Lewiu, R. Struthers, A. M. Ollivier, Caygill, and N. Black (hon. secretary). Correspondence was read—From Mr F. Wilding, regretting that a long-standing engagement would prevent his putting in an appearance on the 16th. Mr A. McKie also wrote, pleading a prior engagement. Major Lean wrote, stating he should be glad to act on the committee. Mr F. M. Robinson wrote, regretting he would he out of town on anniversary day.
It was agreed that Messrs H. V. Anson and T. D. Condell be asked to- officiate as starters.
The Secretary of the Dunedin Caledonian Society wrote in reply to an application for the Scotch Standard, stating that the society’s rule not to lend the flag would he relaxed in favor of the Christchurch society, and that some competitors from Otago were coming to Christchurch to participate in the sports. Mr H. A. Watt moved, and it was agreed —■“ That the thanks of the society he conveyed to the Dunedin Society for the prompt reply, and for the loan of the flag, seeing they had broken through their rules.”
Sundry matters, of routine were confided to Messrs Sutherland and Ollivier.
Mr H. A. Watt hoped that men -would be stationed at the gates, to see that no one got in without paying, and also that precautions be taken to see that no inebriated persons gained admittance. Mr Sutherland thought that all these matters could be safely left to Mr Oliivier and himself.
Mr H. A. Watt stated that he had gone through the programme with the help of Mr A. C. Wilson, which was so arranged that no two events should clash.
The programme was then read to the meeting, agreed to, and ordered to be printed. It was determined —“ That the judges have the power to withhold any first prize if the competitors be not considered worthy of it.”
It was agreed to advertise the sale of privileges—viz., one large publican’s booth and two confectionery booths, for Monday next.
Several band tenders were opened, and that of the City Guards was accepted. The selection of ribbons for the stewards was left to Mr H. A. Watt.
Mr A. C. Wilson proposed that Mr Hogben’s name be added to the committee. It was determined to ask Messrs Gunderson and Hunt to officiate as time-keepers. The committee then adjourned till Monday next at 4.30.
