THE ANNIVERSARY HOLIDAY.
Some little difference of opinion appears to prevail, with regard to the day oa which the usual holiday of the an-.i verssry of Canterbury should br> observed. This year, unfortunately, it fails upon & Saturday, the one day in the week when tradespeople do business with their country friends. This, it is argued, and wo think very justly, will militate considerably against the general observance of the day as a holiday. It is very desirable, wo should like to point out, that in connection with an event such as tho anniversary of the foundation of the settlement there should bo as much unanimity in the matter as possible. If tho present intention of celebrating it on Saturday is adhered to a number of persons will be debarred from enjoying a day’s outing. It will bo obviously impassible to stop tho whole machinery of business on a Saturday without very great inconvenience, whereas a day could be spared easily, say, on tho Monday. This would enable all the employes in tha various business houses to have a holiday, whereas they will be deprived of it should the proposed alteration not ha made. ~We cannot see what possible difference it will make if tho holiday be proclaimed on Monday instead of Saturday. When the 16th falls on a Sunday, as it will next year, it must of necessity he observed on tho Monday. Why there should bo any objection to a course which will enable all to participate in tho holiday wo cannot conceive. The business people, if the change is made, will not bo inconvenienced by losing their best day in tho week, and the sports, &0., projected will come off with just as much eclat on tha Monday as on tho Saturday. In tho interest of the hard worked employes in drapery establishments and other places of business, wo hope to see the movement for the celebration of the IGih on Monday a success.
A GOOD OPENING. It is with very great pleasure that we have noticed the decision of the Admiralty to call for sample shipments of corned beef iu New Zealand, with a view io the supply of the navy, ahenld the samples bo approved. This, wo hope, will bo the case, and if only the (rial shipments are of the quality exhibited at the late show wo need not fesr the result. The decision of tho Admiralty on this matter, coupled with the development of tho frozen meat industry, points to a remunerative on let for our surplus meat, such as should bo very encouraging to the grazier and tho people of Canterbury generally. Oar trouble has been for some time not to produce, but to find a market for the stock when ready. Now, should the shipment to England prove a success, a very large trade will at once be opened. Of the quality of our beef there can be no doubt, and wo hope that those who have made this trade a specialty will come forward on this occasion and send in a contribution to the shipment. Some difficulty appears to bo anticipated as to a supply of casks, and donhtr are expressed whether the Now Zealand

The acceptance c£ a fender in the cilo<y ...cans a very large amount of money yearly coming- in, breirl.s the opening up of a now channel for the disposal of our produce.
