The election of a member for Melbourne province for the Legislative Council has resulted in the return of Mr Ham, who beat Dr. Beany by seven votes. Mr Coffin, ■who was also a candidate, was third. SYDNEY, December 1.
In his speech at Hastings last evening Sir H. Partes said that he refused to accept his defeat for East Sydney as the verdict of the country, but that it would probably result in certain changes in the Government.
