AUCKLAND, November 30.

The Hon. Mr Bryce returned from Rotorua via the "Waikato yesterday. He examined the Rotorua road and railway and was satisfied with the route chosen.

The City Council having failed in their application to the District Court Judge for an injunction to restrain the Auckland Manure and Tallow Manufacturing Company from erecting their factory near the western spring of the city water supply, intend now to move the Supreme Court in the matter.

WELLINGTON, November 30. Considerable surprise is expressed amongst the volunteers at the terms of the Order in Council which declares that the now regulations are now in force. A departmental circular has been issued stating that they come into operation on the Ist January, but the Order in Council is precise, and the volunteers seem uncertain what to do. A second application was made yesterday to the Minister of Justice by Mr Edward Shaw, counsel for the prisoner Longhurst, for a remission of the remaining portion of hits client's sentence. The request will be considered by the Cabinet at an early date. During the month ending to-day there were registered in Wellington district 109 births, 43 deaths, and 22 certificates of mai'riage. The Ii.M.S. Zealandia, with the English mails of the 2nd Novenibei-, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 20th inst., two days later than the time-table date. The City of Sydney, with the November Colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 28th inst., two days earlier than the date fixed in the time-table. The following team has been chosen to represent Wellington in the Auckland Cricket match : —Alpe, Blaeklock, Brown, Firth, Heenan, Lynch, Knopp, ICreeft, Luxford, Nieholls, and W. J. Salmon. GKEYMOUTH, November 30. The Customs duties collected during the month just ended were .£2252 ; for the corresponding month, 1881, £2350. Gold duty, £SBS ; beer duty (excise), .£64. During the month of November, 40 births, 12 marriages, and S deaths were registered in Timaru. The vital statistics for Oamaru are — Births, 29 ; deaths, 9 ; marriages, 8. A man named liobinson was injured on the railway line to-day by a trolly running off the line and a log which was on the trolly falling on him. The amount of Customs revenue collected at the port of Oamaru for the month of November was £1706 2s. DUNE DIN, November 30. A melancholy and fatal accident occurred at the Maori Kaik to-day by which one of the passengers of the steamer Plucky, which had gone there on an excursion trip, was killed, llis name was Salmon, manager of a brushware factory in Cumberland stoeet. Ho was sitting at the bottom of a steep incline, when a horse at top dislodged a stone, which, rolling down struck him on the back of the neck, killing him

instantaneously. He is understood to be a single man. Detective Walker has been transferred to Wellington. Still another serious bush fire is reported, this time at the head of the Hawea Lake, where it is feared the whole of a valuable forest will be destroyed. INVEECABGILL, November 30.

Mr Archibald Forbes delivered the third lecture this evening in Sloan's Theatre to an excellent audience, The Caledonian and Gaelic Society did not muster so numerously as expected. Shortly after the conclusion of the lecture a large company met Mr Forbes in Dischler's Hotel, where he was entertained at a banquet. In response to the toast of his health, the guest of the evening gave a happy characteristic address.
