The Takapuna Jockey Club races came off to-day. .Residents' Plate, 25 sovs. Merlin ... ... 1 Chancellor ... ... ... 2 The brothers Duder withdrew the Marquis after the jockey weighed out, and was in the saddle and on the course. The stewards imposed a fine on the owners for not scratching within the prescribed time. Much dissatisfaction was caused. The race was a hollow affair, Merlin winning hard held. Handicap Hurdle Race, 40 sovs. Lonehand 1 Shakespeare's Chancellor ... 2 Halstead's Tricotrin 3 Angler, Duke, and Whitefoot ran. Lonehand won by a length, after a grand race. The following events were run off yesterday after we went to press : HACK HURDLES. Mr Dillon's Hercules 1 SELLING RACE. Mr Ray's Taratahi 1 W.O. HANDICAP TROT. Mr Best's Deception (18sec) 1 Mr Chavannes'Tommy (scratch) ... 2 Mr Armstrong's Borack (15sec.) ... 3
SPRING HANDICAP. Mr Bates'Poet (Wattie) 1 Mr Pollock's Hippodamia ... (Laing) 2 Mr Owen's Diosma ... (W. Holmes) 3 Kakapo and Kore also started. When the flag fell Diosma's jockey, making most of the light weight, sent his mare to the front, cutting out the running at a good pace, Rore lying second, and Hippodamia last. After passing the stand the lot took closer order, Diosma leading The Poet by a length into the back stretch, all the rest in a cluster. On reaching the road The Poet dispossessed Diosma of the lead, and simultaneously Hippodamia passed Pore and Kakapo, and drew up to Diosma, who was beaten at the turn into the straight. Laing challenged' at the distance, biit the filly could not reach The Poet, who, after a little shaking up, won cleverly by two lengths, Diosma being three lengths away. The rest were beaten off. Time—3min 13sec. The Hack Race was won by Mr Dillon s Hercules. CONSOLATION KACE. Hippodamia, Bst 91b (Laing) 1 Kakapo, 7st (T- Kay) 2 Nikau, Ust7lb ... 3 Won hard hold by half-a-length. DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING. The following events were run off yesterday after we went to press : St. Andrew's Handicap, a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each for acceptors, with 200 sovs added, the sweepstakes to go to the second horse ; 2 miles. Messrs Mason and Vallance's blk c Turquoise, 3 yrs, by Tubal Cain —Topaz, 7stßlb _ (Williams) 1
Sir H. Robinson's br m Lady Enmia, 5 yrs, Bstslb (M. Allen) 2 Mr Kirby's ch h (Butler) 3 Betting, 6 to 4 on Lady Emma, 3 to 2 agst Turquoise, 3 to 1 Adamant. LadyEinnia got the worst of the start. Turquoise led her at the first mile by four or five lengths, with Adamant beside him. Lady Emma gradually decreased the distance between herself and the leaders, but at a mile and three-quarters Turquoise put the steam on and the gap widened again, much to the- uneasiness of the favourite's supporters. Allen called on her as they turned into the straight, and she came up on the outside and passed Adamant, but could never geton terms with T ur quoise, who won hands down by a length and a half from Lady Emma. Adamant ran a good horse, and finished only a length behind Lady Emma. Time, 3min 45sec; the last mile being done in lmin 47sec. Of .£504 in the totalisator J 3184 were on Turquoise. Selling Race, of 40 sovs. Mr McKay's Aurora 1 Mr Stephenson's Eugenie 2 Gang Awa and Flageolet also ran.
Aurora won by twenty lengths. Spring Handicap, a sweepstakes of 2 sovs each for acceptors, with 70 sovs added ; the sweep to go to the second horse ; one mile and a distance. The winner of the St. Andrew's Handicap to carry 71b extra. Mr D. O'Brien's b h Tasman, 4 yrs, Bstslb 1 Hon. G. McLean's b m Gitana, 4 yrs, 6st9lb 2 Somnus (Bst 21b), Eangatira (7st 101 b), and Nautilus (7st 41b), also ran. Entering the straight Tasman led by a length, but Gitana fought it out to the finish, and Clifford landed the favorite a winner by only a head. Time, 2min 3£sec. Of £670 in the totalisator .£334 were on the winner.
A Benevolent Scurry concluded the day's racing. The second day is on Saturday.
