[per press association.] AUCKLAND, November 29. The acceptances for the Auckland Cup and Steeplechase are duo on Friday next. At a meeting of the Catholics in St. Patrick’s Hall, Daniel Lynch presiding, Mr James Book, of Wellington, explained the objects and principles of the Colonial Land Settlement and Endowment Association of Now Zealand, Limited. After some discussion a resolution was unanimously passed approving of the principles and objects of the scheme. There was a good attendance, and much interest was shown in the project. The Coffee Palace Company is to be wound up. The sale of the site realised £3900. The shareholders who paid calls will get a fair return for the money paid. Richard Henley, Thomas Stewart, Peter Young, Joseph Roderigues, Benjamin Sutherland, George Dean, and John Erickson, of the crew of the steamer Wellington, wore committed for trial for robbery of £652 worth of jewellery on the steamer. At the inquest on the body of Hugh Hamilton, who fractured his skull by falling against the post of a bedstead on entering his bedroom in the dark, the evidence showed the deceased had returned homo intoxicated. A verdict of “ Accidental death” was returned.

Two lads, G. Murphy and R. Smith, were arrested for wholesale shoplifting. There are nine charges against them. The local directors here of the Mutual Life Association of Sydney have purchased a splendid block of land in Queen street, at a cost of £7OOO, upon which it is intended to erect handsome offices and buildings. The Mutual Life Company intend pushing their New Zealand business vigorously, and to invest some of their surplus funds in this colony. WELLINGTON, November 29.

There is a regular water famine in parts of town, water being packed from river to parts without wells. MrE. Shaw, solicitor, has renewed his application to the Minister of Justice that the remainder of the sentence passed on Longhurst bo remitted. It is understood that now the judgment of the Appeal Court has been delivered, that the Cabinet will definitely decide whether or not any action should be taken with regard to releasing Longhurst. At a meeting of the Education Board today it was decided that the pupils of classical or other schools for higher education be ineligible to compete for the annual scholarships offered by the Board. The poll of the burgesses was taken today re the proposal to borrow £15,000 for sewage works for the borough, and resulted as follows : —For the proposal, 75; against, 125.

A meeting of farmers and others was held this evening at Cave Valley, for the purpose of considering what steps should be taken to form a Dairy Factory Company. The meeting decided to form a company with a capital of £IOOO. A committee was appointed to collect information and to report at another meeting. The meeting iroke up with good promises of support. The month’s Customs revenue is £37,119 18s 6d; for the corresponding month last year it was £34,453 5s 3d. The Caledonian Society purpose entertaining Mr Archibald Forbes at a dinner next Tuesday evening. The bush fire at Waikaia, in the interior, is said to be still raging. One homestead has been burnt. A heavy bush fire is also reported from the head of the Wakatipu Lake, in which neighborhood an intense heat prevails, and the wheat crop is said to be despaired of. Mr J. Shand’s Hindon estate, comprising 9000 acres, has been sold by auction to Messrs Boyd Bros, for £2 per acre. INVERCARGILL, November 29.

Several Northern papers are announcing Southland A. and P. Show for the 7th pro-x. This is wr«ng, and probably the Western District show is meant, which will be held on that date. The Southland show is on the 14th prox, G. M. Gilchrist, constable, was committed for trial for stabbing Maurice Gorman. Archibald Forbes delivered his second lecture to-night. Considering the counter attraction, charge, and date of lecture, the attendance was excellent. There is great enthusiasm over the banquet to be given to-morrow night after the lecture.
