THE SUMNER ROAD NUISANCE.
To the Editor of the Globe.
Sib, —It seems to me to be a great shame that the authorities in Lyttelton do not take the health of the people of the borough more iuto their consideration. As most persons are aware the road loading from Lyttelton to Sumner is one of the two favorite walks used as a promenade, especially on Sundays and holidays, when a great number of people from Christchurch, who wish a little of the sea breeze, walk out, generally as far as Sticking Point. Before reaching that place there is a road that branches off leading down past the reclamation works, at t he junction of which and the Sumner road the whole of the rubbish of Port is emptied daily. Now, the stench arising from that part of the road is something dreadful. On Sunday evening last, the smell was almost enough to “ knock a horse down,” In my opinion the rubbish should be carted down and deposited at the foot of the road near the water, along with the night soil. As it is at present it is detrimental to every one.
Yours, &c., A EESIDENT. Lyttelton, November 27th, 18S2.
