The owners of the barque Gazelle havo issued a writ against the Commissioner of Customs, for the value of the vessel, and damages for detention hy the Customs’ officer. Sometime ago lOOlbs of contraband tobacco were found on board, and the captain was fined £IOO, which he paid. The vessel was subsequently seized by the Customs. ,

DUNEDIN, November 29. Mrs McVickar died last night from the result of her self-inflicted injuries.

A further meeting of Singer’s creditors to-day agreed to accept a compromise of eight shillings in the £, half cash, the balance in four months. Debts to upwards of £IO,OOO have been proved. A fire early this morning destroyed an old wooden building in Stafford street, known as Cobb’s stables, and adjoining the premises used by Hargan and Co. for bottling purposes. The fire is supposed to have been accidental. _ The insurances ascertainable are —Scottish Imperial, £4OO ; South British, £750; Phoenix, £2OO ; Association, £250; United, £350; London and Lancashire, £150; Norwich, £IOO ; Union, £420.

Lady Emma is scratched for the St. Andrew’s Handicap. Later. Lady Emma’s scratching is officially denied, but she is reported as amiss.
