CITY COUNCIL.

The City Council met last evening at seven o’clock. Present —His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs. Ayers, Vincent, Hiorns, Louisson, Bowman, Bruce, Jenkins, Prudhoe, Eeese, Kiver, Lambert, Thomson.

The consideration of the miscellaneous by-law, discussed at previous meetings, was resumed, and, after some slight amendments were made, the by-law was adopted. The Council then proceeded to the ordinary business. The receipts for the past fortnight were stated at £1427 5s Id, and the expenditure at £470 10s 6d. The credit balance at the Bank was £1461 0s 4d.

The following read:—

correspondence was

From Mr J. Baxter and twenty other ratepayers residing in Victoria street, between Kilxnore street and Victoria bridge, complaining that this portion of the street was not sufficiently watered. Cr. Ayers stated that the matter was being considered by the works committee. From Mr W. H. Sneesby and three other ratepayers, stating that if the Council filled up a drain in Bowen street without first laying pipes therein, the nuisance would be aggravated. Cr. Ayers said the subject of this petition had been considered by the works committee, who were of opinion that the difficulty feared by the petitioners would not occur.

This explanation was approved of. From Mr G. L. Lee, Eeturning Officer, notifying the election of Mr J. G. Euddenklau as Mayor. From the Popular Sports Committee, asking the Council to give its usual donation of £25 towards tho anniversary sports. From Mr E. H. Ehodes, forwarding a cheque for £SO in acknowledgment of the services rendered by the Fire Brigade at the recent fire at his residence at Elmwood. He had mentioned at the time that he intended to make a present to the brigade, but in consequence of the breaking up of his home he had been unable to attend to the matter at an earlier date.

The Mayor said the letter had been acknowledged with thanks. This action was approved of. On the motion of Cr. Hiorns, seconded by Cr. Jenkins, it was resolved that £25 be paid to the members of tho Fire Brigade, and that the balance be placed to the credit of the Fire Prevention Fund. A letter was read from Mr M. Davie, engineer to the Christchurch Tramway Company, forwarding plans showing the alterations which the company intended to effect in Cathedral square. Cr. Ayers moved that the matter be referred to the works committee, to report at next meeting. Cr. Kiver seconded, and tho motion was agreed to. The Mayor remarked that tho alterations, if agreed to, could not bo given effect to before the by-law came in force on the first of January. Mr Evans, secretary of the Tramway Company, who was present, represented that the matter was one of great urgency, and as the Council had previously been in possession of the necessary plans it could perhaps take action at an earlier date than the Ist January. The Mayor said the question would be considered by the works committee at its meeting next day. The City Surveyor’s report was road as follows : 1. The channelling round Oxford terrace east is completed, and the road is'now being shingled. 2. The channelling “of Bowen street, off Madras street, is being laid. 3. That portion of tho South belt between Selwyn street and Lincoln road has been shingled. .4. Tho works committee have visited Lumb’s lane, and they have the subject still under consideration. The amount of the work required to be done I estimate at £lsl, the half of which amount the owners of property on each side of the lane agree to contribute. 5. 1 have made an estimate of the forming, shingling, and channelling Mr England’s right-of-way, running from Tuam street to Lichfield street, and communicated the result to him.

The report was approved of. On tho motion of Cr. Louisson, seconded by Cr. Hiorns, the sum of £25 was voted to the Popular Sports Association. After granting several cab drivers’ licenses, the Council adjourned.
