The following is a full account of this match. The weather was lovely, but very few of the public turned out, only some £7 or £8 being taken at the gates. Andrews having hurt his side very badly could not play for the local team. The betting was greatly in favor of the visitors, the local men sent Leith and Greenwood first to the wickets, and Greenwood was bowled by Gill's second ball. Harris filled the breach, and at once started to score off the last of the over of Lankham, who was bowling from the east and with the wind. Leith hit prettily to leg for 3; Harris then made 2, and Leith treated Gill to a fiver, which also counted 2. In Lankham's next over, he was caught at the wickets—2—lo—l4. Parker Jcame next, and Harris, amid applause, drove Gill prettily along the carpet for 4, a single resulting from an overthrow, lhe fielding of the visitors at this stage was rather loose, and the ball was more than once rather widely returned. Immediately after Harris' hit Parker was given out lbw —3—2—23, and things not looking particularly bright for the local men. Fleming was next man, and nothing worthy of mention ensued for some time, both players batting carefully. ' Fleming did not stay long, for before he had contributed the score he spooned one of Lankham's into Blair's hands at point—4—o—2B. Holgate came in, and there were two lefthanders at the wickets. Gill was allowed seven balls in his next over, and his last sent Holgate to the right about—s—o—29. Skitch joined Harris, who contented himself with stopping an over from Lankham. Skitch, however, was not so successful, a beauty from Gill running away with his middle stump—C—o—3o. Hayward spoiled the rest of the over with two fine hits to the off for two and three respectively. He was not, however, destined to last long, for he popped Lankham quietly into Blair's hand at point—7—s—3s. Hadfield started with a rather fluky hit and gave another chance, but Barton, in the slips, failed to reach it and a run resulted. Harris next put one to square leg, and was well taken by Arneil. He made 19 in his usual pretty and judicious style, and was loudly applauded on returning to the pavilion. Ivens came to the wickets and commenced with a chance to Blair, who for once failed to hold the ball. He then sent one to longoff, which O'Brien tried well but failed to hold. Hadfield then got a nice one from Gill, which he sent high over to the fence to the booth—the hit of the innings. Ivens then gave another chance hard into the long-off's hand, and had the satisfaction of seeing it fall safely to the ground. Hadfield was dismissed by a trimmer from Gill, who was bowling in good form and varying his pace considerably—9—9 —57. Frith, the last man, was bowled by the second ball which he received from Gill. The local men had been at the wickets exactly an hour, during which time they made 57, Harris being top scorer with 19. Testro and Barton for the Auckland men were sent in to oppose the bowling of Frith and Hayward. Frith sent down a maiden, and Hayward followed suit. Shortly afterwards Frith got Testro's leg before wicket —l—2 —7. Arneil, one of the best bats of the team, came next. A 3 from Arneil and sundry singles from both players sent 18 up, and an adjournment was then made for lunch. After the interval, runs came in quick succession, and Arneil, who was playing forward in fine style, stepped out to Frith and repeatedly drove him along the carpet for 2's and 3's till 30 was hoisted. A fine squarely-hit 4 by Arneil, off Frith, brought 50 up. After a few more runs from Arneil's bat, Frith and Hayward changed ends, and Arneil had to retire shortly afterwards through an easy chance which he gave to Harris, off Hayward. His 34 was contributed by faultless cricket. Blair, the Bonnor of the team, was the incomer, and after giving the bowlers a sample of his batting powers, in attempting a short run] was sent back to the dressing room —3 —B—79. O'Brien came next, and after making 2, was easily caught by Harris off Hayward. Robinson, the captain of the team, was the next to keep Barton company, but he did not do so long, for Parker made a brilliant catch low at mid-off. He was loudly applauded for this feat. Yates came next. A couple of overs after this sent up the century, with applause. Skitch was then put on in the place of Frith, who seemed to be all at sea on the rough dry pitch. Fleming went on at the other end, and started with two full pitchers, which were hit for 1 and 3 runs. Skitch's second over was sent down at a cost of 6 runs, each ball being pitched a yard or more short. The change had the result of hoisting 110 and 120, and of getting rid of Yates, who was clean bowled by a yorker from Skitch —6—B —124. Gardner was- the next to go (I bw, b Skitch)—7—7—l24. Dufaur was the ninth man, and was well caught at long off by Hadfield. Lankham joined Barton and was clean bowled by Skitch, leaving Barton not out with 76 to his credit. He received quite an ovation on returning from the field. During his long innings, he went in first and carried out his bat, he only gave two chances; one to Fleming before the adjournment, and a difficult chance of stumping to Greenwood. The innings closed for a total of 150. The Dunedin men went in for a quarter of an hour's batting, and when time was called Harris and Skitch were not out with 6 and 0 respectively, Greenwood having had the misfortune to be caught off his wrist by Lankham, the long slip. THIS DAY. A thick drizzling- rain fell during- the forenoon, and play was postponed in consequence till one o'clock. Then, with it still raining, Otago went in with one wicket down for 9 runs in second innings, and S 7 to get to save a defeat in one innings. Harris, the not out man of yesterday, was not on the ground, and Beith took his place with Skitch, the other not out. Lankham and Gill again bowled for Auckland. Each man got a single, when Gill, who was bowling with great pace, picked off Leith's bails—2—l—ll. Harris, the not out of yesterday, came in next, and after several runs had been added Skitch was given out leg before wicket. Ivens took his place, but, after getting a single, was bowled by Lankham-4—1—19. The weather by this time was fine, and the disadvantages of a greasy ball were not so much felt by the bowlers. Harris, after playing a grand innings of 23, was caught by Gill oil Harris. There were now five wickets down for 32. Holgate and Parker played successive maidens very steadily, and then the latter began to Bcore slowly, but at last rashly lifted one of Lankhain's into Barton's hands at mid-on—C—5 —37. The teams then adjourned for lunch. Play will be resumed at three. Otago has now 39 Iruns for six wickets down. The weather is splendid.
Latest. The Auckland team won in one innings and 45 runs.
