ASHBURTON SPRING MEETING. THIS DAY. [by telegraph.] [prom our own correspondent.] The weather is beautiful, and there is a capital attendance. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs, over eight flights of hurdles, about 3ft 6in high; nomination, 2 sovs ; acceptance, 3 sovs; two miles. Mr P. Jones’ Lady Perdita, 9st 91b ... 1 Mr P. Butler’s The Agent, 12st 61b ... 2 Albion (9st) and Musket (Bstslb) also ran. Betting—6 to 4 on Agent, 2to 1 against the rest.

Albion led off and showed the way over the first hurdle. Agent last. Passing the stand Albion still led, Lady Perdita was second. Agent last. Shortly after Lady Perdita took first place. Agent second, Albion third. The latter ran round the hurdle at the far end, and Agent and Lady Perdita entered the straight together. At the distance both horses were being ridden, and a fine finish resulted in a length victory to the outsider. Agent second, the others nowhere. Time, 4min 12secs.

Totalisator pool, 274—63 on the winner. Racing Club Handicap of 75 .sovs added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs each. Second horse to receive 10 sovs. One and a half miles. Messrs Mason and Vallance’s Turquoise (J. Webster) 1 Messrs Bishop and Lemon’s The Curate (Derrett) 2 Mr G. Lawson’s Speculation ... ... 3 Betting, 3 to 1 on Turquoise; 4to 1 against others. A capital start was effected, Curate loading off, with Turquoise second. No alteretian occurred until nearing the straight, when Turquoise went up and finished an easy winner by one-and-three-quarter length. Speculation third. Time, 2min ISsec. Totalisator pool, 210—131 on the winner. County Plate (Handicap) of 30 sovs ; nomination, 1 sov ; acceptance, 1 sov ; district horses only ; one and a quarter miles. Mr G. Lawson’s Marchioness Neil, Sst 21b (Wattle) 1 Mr M. Friedlander’s Zulu, 5 yrs, Sst ... 2 Mr Claridge’s Winnie, Sst 51b ... ... 3 Five others ran. Our John was quickest away, with Winnie second. Marchioness Neil third, the remainder tailing off. Twilight bringing up the rear. Winnie led round the back stretch. Our John falling back. Marchioness Noil taking second place. At the turn the last-named ran up and collared Winnie, and the two entered the straight side by side. Zulu then took third place, and quickly passing Winnie finished within a length of Marchioness Neil, Winnie third, the rest nowhere. Time, 2min 17sec. Totalisator, 323—191 on the winner.
