When the ship Northampton was put in Fitzroy dock at Sydney, it was found that besides about 20ft of her keel and a portion of her stem being ripped off, there was a hole 15ft long on her port side. What prevented her foundering was the presence of cement, which was spread on the inner lining of iron and put there to prevent rust. The Northampton was in this port some limn past in command of Captain Clare, her present master, and who has been called upon by the New South AVales Doard to show cause why his certificate should not be cancelled. Captain Clare is an old navigator, with a life-long experience, a circumstance which will add to the weight of the misfortune. The ship is a composite built vessel, and it is estimated .£4OOO would he xequired to repair her. The New Zealand Shipping Company s barque Mataura. when in latitude 49 S., longitude 49 W., came across a large iceberg .about a mile at the base and 300 ft in height, ■with a quantity of loose ice to the N.E. of it. The Mataura met a heavy S.E. gale at the same time, accompanied by a heavy and continuous fall of snow, while the sea broke frequently on hoard, flooding the decks. It is, however, most satisfactory to learn that the refrigerating machinery worked just as smoothly as in the finest weather. During part of the passage the weather was intensely hot, but the machinery was kept steadily at work, and the temperature in the meat-chambfer was seldom over 17deg .Fahrenheit, or 15deg of frost.
