AUCKLAND, November 20.
The body of the missing man George Savage has been found by a Maori a mile from where he was believed to have attempted to cross the Munui Eiver. A party of American Evangelists who came by the last mail steamer have commenced an evangelistic mission in Auckland.
The opera of “ Billee Taylor ” was produced to-night hy McCallum’s Company for the first time at the Opera House to an excellent house with groat success .J Judge Macdonald refused the injunction applied for by the Corporation against the Manure and Tallow Manufacturing Company for planting a factory in the vicinity of the city water supply springs, on the ground that the nuisance must be first created and proved to exist before the injunction could be granted. Mr H. Dodson, M.H.E., has been elected Mayor of Blenheim for the ensuing year, WELLINGTON. November 20.
A small stoi'e and dwelling-house at Otaki were destroyed by fire last night. The building was insured for ,£3OO. The loss, however, is estimated at -£6OO above this amount. Tho origin the fire is unknown, but it is probable an inquiry will be held. The Appeal Court was continued to-day, and the case of Reynolds v Napier (Dunedin) was commenced. The case is of an exceedingly complicated nature, involving a largo variety of legal points. It is oxSected to occupy tho Court until Wednosav next.
A number of summonses has been taken out by the Registrar General against persons who have neglected to vaccinate their children.
Owing to the continued decrease of water supply, the mains twill be charged only within certain hours after Wednesday next, should there be no heavy rain n the meantime.
Considerable dissatisfaction has been expressed at the non-payment of prizes won at the recent Athletic Sports, held in the Basin Reserve on the Prince of Wales’ Birthday, or of the band which played on that occasion. An application on the subject has been made to the police, but the police authorities did not see their way to interfere. The promoter of the sports is not in town at present. TIMARU, November 20. Mr John Jackson was to-day elected Mayor of Timaru unopposed.
A man named John Green was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labor for brutally assaulting a policeman with a bottle, and biting one of his fingers off. The policeman’s head was terribly cut and bruised. The Minister of Lands returned to town to-night after an extensive tour through the back count) y. Ho expresses himself well pleased with what ho has seen. Eight candidates were nominated to-day for the four seats representing the borough on the Timaru High School Board. The total amount of advertised money to be run for at the South Canterbury Jockey Club meeting in April next is .£6BO. DUNEDIN, November 20. James Renwick, insurance agent, Palmerston, was found drowned yesterday. It is supposed to he a case of suicide. He leaves a wife and family in distressed circumstances. Messrs A. H. Ross and J. B. Thomson, both members of the City Council, and the former an ox-Mayor, were nominated for the Mayoralty to-day. Messrs Dalgoty and Co. here have received a cable message from London dated Nov. 17th, to the effect that the market for frozen mutton has advanced, and the moat is now at 7d per lb for the best quality. The Minister of Public Works went South to-day. Owing to the electrical disturbances since Saturday night the work of the telegraph office in Dunedin has been greatly delayed. There was a constant current of electricity flowing on the lines equivalent to ten times tile strength of the batteries generally used. Some of the batteries had to be disconnected altogether, and messages were sent without the use of the battery at all, a feat never before done in the annals of New Zealand telegraphy. Yesterday afternoon the business was almost at a standstill.
This week promises to be a gala week. To-night Simonsen’s Opera Company play “ Boceacio ” for the first time, and the -Royal Australian Circus opens on Wednesday. The agricultural shovr begins, and also the Benevolent Institution Carnival. A public half-holiday is declared on Thursday in connection with the show, and on Friday the Auckland cricketers begin their match against the Dunedin eleven. The Dunedin team is considered very poor.
