DRAINAGE BOARD.
The usual mooting; of tho Christchurch 'District Drainage Board was held at 3 p.m. yesterday. Present—Messrs L. Harper (in the chair), W. Vincent, W. White, jun., Hubbard, Ashworth, Dunbar, Parker, and S. Manning. The engineer’s report was road. It was resolved to forward tho clause of the report referring to the ford in the Hcathcote put in by Messrs Austin and Kirk to Captain Fisher. It was decided that a letter bo sent for signature by Mr Stinson with reference to
the completion of his contract. The question of damage to streets in. Sydenham was referred to the engineer Witc respect to the emptying of the East Christchurch School hath, it was resoive : that the charge for so emptying he £l, the chare-os for connections, Ac., being defrayed by the committee. The arrangement to be subject to the pleasure of the Board. The various other clauses of the report were then dealt with. The following correspondence was read : —From the Sydenham Borough Council, with reference to to the prevention of stiay cattle injuring the drains, Ac. 1 rom the Linwood Town Board on the same matter, also enquiring whether particulars could be furnished respecting the drainage Oi Gloucester and Worcester streets east, and asking that Jackson’s creek might be covered in. From the Avon Boad Board, stating their willingness to defray half the cost of the prevention of stray cattle damaging the drains if a ranger wore appointed by the Drainage Board, also stating that a deputation would wait on the Board for the purpose of receiving information relative to the necessary drainage works in the district. Prom the Biocarton Boad Board, stating that they had decided to engage a ranger to impound cattle in their district. The Board also called attention to the dangerous state of the drain on the Fendaltown road, and requested that it might at once ho attended to. Prom the Co-operative Freehold Land Society, requesting that the Board would alter the course of a drain running through the laud of the association at Looksley. Prom Mr W. E. Brown and several others, calling attention to the necessity existing for a pipe sewer along New street from Madras street. From Mr Dillon, stating that some time ago he had, by direction of the Board, taken the culvert out of Jackson’s creek, but other persons still continued to keep theirs in.
The con-espondencc was dealt with as follows :—lt was resolved to supply the - formation required by the Linwood Town Board as to the drainage of Gloucester and Worcester streets East. The matter with regard to Jackson’s creek was rofex-red to the engineer. With respect to the ditch on the Fendalton road, the Board decided to reply that the Board could not see its way clear to do anything in the matter. The question of the diversion of the drain at Locksloy, as asked for by the Co-opera-tive Freehold Land Association, was referred to the engineer. With regard to the question of the construction of a pipe sewer from Madras street along New street, it was decided to reply that there were no funds for the purpose. Mr Dillon’s application was referred to the engineer with power to act, the other residents who have covex-ed in the creek being informed that the permission given by the engineer is revoked, and that they will have to remove the same. Mr Mxxnro waited on the Board with reference to the deepening of Preston’s Creek. Mr Vincent stated that as there was considerable difficulty in obtaining the rates in the Avon district, the Board could not do any work, as they had no funds. Mr Munro said that unless the Drainage Board did something in the matter, they would have to apply to the Board of Health. [Laughter.] The Chaix-man said it was useless discussing the matter, as the Board had no funds at present, and nothing could he done until the rates came in. He woxxld point out that there was £3OO of 1881 x-ates outstanding, as well as £9OO of 1882 rates. Until these were collected they could do nothing. Mr McFadden waited on the Board with reference to a drain on the Canal Eeserve which requix-ed cleaning out, as it flooded his land. The matter was referred to the inspector. A number of rules for house connections with ithe sewers were considered and adopted by the Board. Accounts to the amoxxnt of £371 12s 10d wex-e passed for payment. Mr Hxxbbard moved that the sum of £SO be given as a bonxxs to the late assistant engineer, Mr Napper, in consideration of services rendered.
Mr Dunbar seconded the motion pro forma. The motion was put and lost, Mr Hubbard being the only vote in favour of it. The Board then adjourned.
