[>EB PEESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, November 14. At the inquest on the body of Mrs Letitia Bryan, drowned on Saturday night, the evidence was very conflicting. The jury returned a verdict of " Accidental death." The dead body found on the Eiver Helensville has been identified as that of a man named Ferguson, who had been engaged to clean the bottom of the cutter Gloria. Three men have been arrested for brutally assaulting a Maori man and woman at Onehunga. At a meeting of the shareholders of the South British Insurance Company, the resolution passed at an extraordinary meeting for increasing the capital was unanimously confirmed. A lodge of Druids, numbering over fifty, was successfully inaugurated to-night by Mr P. Bishop, District President from Wellington. The opening of the railway extension, Whangarei to Deep Water, was celebrated by a trip on the line, at the invitation of the contractors. WELLINGTON, November 13. Mr Johnston, Minister for Public Works, left this afternoon on an official tour theough the South Island. A boy, named James G. Carter, amused himself on Saturday by applying a light to a flask of powder on his father's premises. His right thumb was nearly blown, off, and his eyebrows were singed. Eegarding the drunken riot at Tauherinakau races, Inspector Shearman, in charge of the police here, is making enquiries into the circumstances. Constable Smith, who is stationed in Wairarapa district, states that there were about 500 persons on the ground, of whom fourfifths were the worse for liquor. The drinking appeared to be the chief amusement. He adds that when the fighting commenced he cautioned the publicans not to supply liquor to the persons who exhibited signs of intoxication, and these precautions, so far as practicable, were acted up to, although on several occasions the holders of booths were threatened with violence for refusing. Mr Shearman, it may be mentioned, is taking steps to bring the fioters to justice so far as they are known. TIMAETJ, November 13. ' The first annual show of the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association today was very successful. There were 326 entries in all classes, and about 3000 people were present. The weather was favorable. DIJNEDIN, November 13. The City Council have given notice to the owners of water engines that the supply for engines will be stopped after fourteen days. The Minister of Public Works is expected here on Wednesday night. The half-yearly meeting of the Dunedin Finance, Loan and Agency Company was held to-day. A dividend of 8 per cent, was ordered to be paid, and 15,000 additional shares were agreed to be issued. At a meeting of clergymen and others held to-day, it was resolved as follows : " That the different Christian congregations in and around Dunedin be invited to unite in the formation of a society for the purpose of taking charge of destitute orphans." A committee was appointed to bring the matter before several congregations and report to a future meeting. The suggestion is that no building as an orphanage be provided in the meantime, but that a central committee be appointed to take charge of orphans and place them out in families, &c.

The Angling Association's first prize at the competition on the Prince of Wales' birthday has gone to Mr P. F. Stoddart, whose take from the Shag river was eighteen fish, weighing 2ilb lOoz.
