SALE OE BLOOD STOCK.
The most important and extensive sale v)f thoroughbreds ever held in Canterbury, or tho colony, came off at Eusslcy on Saturday last, November 11th. At about eleven o’clock numerous vehicles commenced to arrive, bringing a fair sprinkling of intending purchasers. The large majority of tho arrivals proved to be mere spectators, attracted by the desire of witnessing the sale, and for seeing themselves the aristocratic youngsters of tho farlamed Eussley stud before their final dispersion to all parts of the colony. The stables there became at once the attraction, and the stalls where the English got foals were located •drew most attention. Next to these, or perhaps equally with them, the interest centred in Mr Nosworthy’s yearlings, the sale of which Mr Stead, in the most ■courteous manner possible, had proposed, and Mr Nosworthy most gladly accepted, -should occur at the same time and place. Of these the brother to the crack two-_year-olds of .the past season and this—Nonsense and Oudeis —was the principal attraction. This colt came in for the most unqualified .praise, and among his most ardent admirers were many of the best judges in the land. The others, particularly the last of old Mermaid’s stock, came in for no meagre praise. To give time to any intending purchasers who might possibly he delayed in town, it was proposed before commencing the sale, to adjourn to the marquee erected in tho rear of the stables, where a most admirable and -sumptuous cold collation was awaiting to xefresh the inner man. This having been done full justice to, Mr Newton, who officiated as auctioneer, commenced the real business of the day. Trickster, the first lot offered, realised his full value, when he fell to a Hawke’s Bay gentleman’s (Mr Gennell) bid of 225g5. Mr • Percy Martin, of the same place, got a nice nibble in the untried two-year-old colt Eotorua, which became his property for the small consideration of 20gs. Mr Hereford had Foul Play's half-brother Beodogran made almost a present to him when the colt fell at his bid of 25gs. Sir Bedevere, a very nice even colt, fell to Mr Brabazon’s bid of 300 gs. Mr Paul, of Marlborough, as agent for his brother in Taranaki, obtained a nice racing looking filly in Leonessa, which went cheap enough at 81gs. The beautifully bred two-year-old English imported filly Poll was a gift to Mr Gennell, of -Napier, at whose bid she fell at 250 gs. The foals got in England and born in the colony were the next offered. The brother to Leeds, by Doncaster, out of Steppe, Mr Stead determined on not sacrificing, so he was passed ,in at 200 gs. Mr Paul had another good nibble in the magnificently bred filly foal by Wild Oats out of Sweet Cicely, when it fell to his bid of 140 gs. G. McLean had a good bargain in the See-Saw —Fairyland colt at 130 gs, as also did Mr Brabazon when the Prince Charlie —Nelly Moore colt fell to his hid of 160 gs. Mr Stead came forward once again and prevented the sacrificing of the Blair Athol —Florence Macarthy filly, to whose bid of 300 gs she returned to her stable.
