NEW ZEALAND METROPOLITAN MEETING. Third Day. Stewards-J. Brabazon, P. Cunningham, J. B. Gresson, S. Garforth, J. Grigg, L. Harper, C. Newton, W. Reeves, 11. Wynn Williams, L. Walker, A. Wilson, J. C. Wason; judge, M. Studholmo; starter, G. W. Coventry; handicappers, the Handicapping Committee ; clerk of the scales, T. Acland; clerk of the course, E. W. Millett; hon. treasurer, G. G. Stead. Favored with splendid racing weather the C.J.C last day was most enjoyable, and the attendance good. The road was in beautiful order, the rain of the preceding day having laid the dust, and made the going very pleasant. There was a very good sprinkling of carriages, and the grand stand was well patronised, the ladies being, argely j represented. The lawn was somewhat too I wet for promenading, so that the principal attraction of the meeting, the display of costumes, was, absent. Sport commenced with commendable punctuality ; the Christchurch Plate being the one to open the ball. For this there were only two goers —the Cup winner, Sir Modred, and Cheviot. The former had all the call in the betting, a confidence which he justified by winning, pretty easily, lead ing from start to finish. The Christchurch Plate A sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 150 sovs added ; weight. for age; second horse to save his stake ; the winner of the Canterbury Cup to carry 71b, winner of the Derby 51b, and of both races 101 b penalty; maidens at starting allowed for 3 years, 51b ; 4 years, 101 b j 5 years and upwards, 141 b. Once round and a distance. Mr I). Proudfoot's b h Sir Modred, Traducer—ldalia, 5 yrs, 9st 111 b (Thomson) 1 Hon. W. Robinson's b c Cheviot, 5 yrs, Sst (Derrett) 2 , Betting, 2 to 1 on Sir Modred. Sir Modred led at the start, passing the stand i a couple of lengths in advance of Cheviot. This order was maintained until passing Ford's, where Cheviot went up a little, but it was plain to be seen even there that, bar accidents, the Cup winner would land this • race also. At the turn into the straight Derrett began to send Cheviot along, and at the rails he made his effort, but Sir Modred was not to be denied, and came away a winner by a length and a half, '. Derrett riding the Derby winner from the : distance. Time, 3min lljsec. For the Metropolitan Handicap there ; were six goers, Welcome Jack and Tur- ■ quoise being scratched. Of these, The ' Poet and The Curate had a following. Natator was fancied by soma, but he has run very unkindly during the meeting, so that there was not so large a number of investors on him as otherwise would have been. Legerdemain and Leos were not much inquired for. The . scratching of Welcome Jack and : Turquoise made the race a more open one than it would otherwise have been. The race was one of the best of the meeting, j as close at home five of them were all in a cluster. Just on the post Natator shot out with a head length from The Poet, who ; struggled gamely for victory, The Curate half a length off third. i The Metropolitan Handicap, a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 150 sovs added ; second horse to save his stake ; i one mile and a half. The Poet, Emir Bey and Leos were quickest, away, with Legerdemain next, Leos, The Curate and Natator next in the order named. Passing Cutts' Gate Legerdemain went up and took the lead, The Poet dropping back into second place, Leos third, The Curate fourth, Natator fifth, and Emir Bey last. At Ford's Legerdemain still led, with The Poet second, The Curate and Leos next, Emir Bey bringing up the rear. Coming into the straight Leos ran into second place, with The Poet and The Curate third, Natator fourth. On comingnearhome all were at the whips, Natator gradually forging ahead as they came down the straight, and getting on terms with The Poet and The Curate. The Fair Agnes colt cut out the running at a warm pace, with Water Nymph second, Trickster and Helena third, close together. After a little distance had been gone Helena took the lead, with Water Nymph second, the Fair Agnes colt third, and Trickster last. Half way down the rails the Fair Agne3 colt came away, running very strong, with Water Nymph second, Helena third, and Trickster fourth. In this order they ran till close to home, when Trickster supplanted Helena in third place, the Fair Agnes colt winning by a length from Water Nymph, Trickster two lengths off the second horse. Time, 52isecs. The Selling Plate Handicap brought out a field of eight, Legerdemain being the absentee. There was one false start, for which Amulet, Aurora, Statesman and Gold Dust went the distance, whipping down the straight as though it were a real stiu-t, to the delight of the spectators. If So, Gitana, Rebecca, and Whitbach remained at the post. When they were sent away Gitana took the lead, with Whitbach in close attendance, and ultimately won a good rase by about a length.
