A note has been addressed to the Powers by the Egyptian Government, in which it is stated that Anglo-French control in Egyptian affairs should be abolished, because it was found that the dual and political character of the English and French Controllers-General had the effect of creating trouble in the government of the country. PARIS, November 9. The French Chambers were opened today, and in the course of an address on the occasion M. Duclerc stated that communications of a friendly character were passing between the English and French Governments on the subject of certain proposals submitted by the British Cabinet for the settlement of affairs in Egypt. M. Duclerc further announced in connection with the presens Socialist agitation in France, that Government were determined to firmly repress any international disorder. In the State elections, the Democrats have achieved a triumphant success in New York, New England States, Pennsylvania, and in the Southern States. The Democratic Party has now assured a majority in Congress. ALEXANDRIA, November 8. Intelligence is to hand from Soudan that fighting between the Egyptian troops and the followers of the false prophet has been proceeding for some days past. November 9. The whole of the engagements have resulted adversely to the Egyptians, but according t,to the latest reports the latter are now retrieving their recent losses. CAIRO, November 8. The preliminary hearing of evidence against Arabi and his fellow-prisoners is now closed. The taking of evidence for the defence begins next month. [special to press association.] Received November 10th, 1.20 p.m. LONDON, November 8, 7.35 p.m. The Governor of Cleveland, the Democratic candidate, has been elected Governor of New York, and Mr Butler, the Democratic candidate, has also secured the Governorship of Massachusetts. The Democrats are secure of a decisive majority in the next Congress. The Republican party expect to gain in the South, but these cannot affect the heavy Democratic successes in the North. Received November 10th, 2.10 p.m. LONDON, November 9, 5.55 p.m. Mr Gladstone, in commenting in the House of Commons on the avowed inten. tion of the Irish members to support Sir Stafford Northcote's amendment for the rejection of the procedure said that the rejection of the cloture would be disastrous to Ireland, as he personally was in favor of a large and liberal measure of self-government for that country. The Sultan has denied that he authorised the letters to Arabi which have been produced before the Special Commissioner. M. Louis Blanc, French journalist and statesman, is seriously ill.
