AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the committee of the above was held to-day at 2 p.m. Present— Messrs Henderson (chairman), Duncan, Norman, Bruce, Mann, J. Anderson, jun., Parker, Mcßeath, Gobble, Gilmour, Deans, Sutherland, and S. Manning. The following correspondence was read : —Prom G. Booth and Sons, suggesting that in the implement classes, as improvements were introduced into machinery, it was necessary that the manufacturers should be allowed to bring before the judges, either by himself, attendant, or agent, any points ho might deem advisable, and where possible give practical demonstration. Mr J. Anderson, jun., said he thought this was a very practical suggestion. All that would be done was to point out the peculiarity of the machine. Mr Gebbie opposed the idea. Mr Duncan thought that unless there was anything new in the machine the exhibitors should not bo with the judges. He thought it would be a great mistake if they allowed the exhibitors to argue the merits of their own implements with the judges. The Secretary pointed out that it was open for exhibitors to write down the improvements on a card aud attach it to the machine.
Mr Parker was in favor of the proposal. Mr Bruce and Mr Norman spoke against the proposition. Mr Anderson, junr., said that he thought the method of judging machinery now was a farce without a trial in the field. He would suggest that the association should consider the advisableness of trying one class of implement each year. Mr Gebbie said he would propose—- “ That the letter be handed over to the revising committee for the catalogue next year.” Mr Duncan suggested that the exhibitors should be allowed to point out, when required, any improvement in their exhibits.
Mr J. Deans seconded the motion, which was carried. From the Town Clerk, Christchurch, forwarding resolution relative to the meeting in conference of representatives of local bodies re East and West Coast Railway, and asking the association to appoint two delegates. Messrs Henderson and Robert Wilkin were appointed as delegates from the association.
Prom Mr J. P. Jameson, chairman of directors of the Linseed Oil and Fibre Company, thanking the association for the use of their room, and requesting that they might be allowed to continue to meet there. It was resolved that the use of the room as requested be granted to the company. Several applications for entertainments on the ground were declined. The Chairman reported what had been done with regard to the “ Now Zealand Herd Book ” with Mr W. J. G. Bluett, and also as to the improvements effected in the grounds.
After the transaction of some routine business, the meeting adjourned.
