A. fire occurred near Johnsonvillc yesterday morning, which resulted in the destruction of a fun'-roomed house, occupied by Mr Robert August, who carries on the ■business of a charoual burner, and owned by Mr Glapbam, hotelkeeper, Ngahauranga. .it appears that at six o’ clock Mr August left tie place for the purpose of loading a , dray with charcoal at some distance, and bad just reached the vehicle, when he observed his house was on fire. He at once ■retraced his steps, and endeavored, with the assistance of some friends, to subdue bho flames, but they had gained too firm a bold on the building, and in less than half ■ttTi hour it was razed to the ground. Efforts to save the fuspitura were also vmsuccessfnL The house was insured, but the ■amount has not transpired. TIMAEU, October 29. Three seamen of the German barque ■Qexd Heyo were brought up at the Police ■Court yesterday afternoon, on a charge of refusing duty, two of them being further charged with broaching cargo. ■The plans and specifications for the proposed woollen factory were received from We to-day. Tenders for the erection of & portion of the building will bo at once <xdled for. An improved permanent way tor tramways and railways has been patented by W. A. Harper and T. C. DonaiiflOQ, of Oamaru. The cost of the proposed way is about .£3OO per mile as against JOI6OO for the present system. DUNEDIN, October 28. The Eailway Department have declined ta make any concession in charges by rail for contributions to the proposed Bonewoleat Institute Carnival. Cnnard and Kellar concluded a season tore last night. Their exhibition of auto«aata is highly interesting. At a meeting of the Eailway Engineiirivors’ and Firemen's Association, the following resolution was carried : —“ That if any locomotive employe get dismissed through being a member of or taking an active part in the association, the branch of -which such employe is a member shall, upon being convinced of this, at «moo take immediate action to stay work.”
