The polling for the election of seven commissioners for the newly formed town district of Linwood took place on Saturday, at the Oddfellows’ Hall, East belt, and created considerable excitement among the electors of the district. Prom the time of the poll closing at 6 p.m. until 8.30 p.m., when the returning officer (Mr W. G. T. Mills) declared the result, there were at least 200 persons assembled outside the hall. Clephane thanked the electors for the proud position they had placed him

Mr B. J. Hale thanked those who had voted for him. He was glad to say he had not asked for a single vote.

Mr G. Collier desired to thank the electors for the great honor they had conferred upon him. He would strongly oppose the borrowing of any money. He would see that every portion of the district had a fair share of the rates expended upon it, and hoped at the end of his term of oflice his actions would show that he had done his duty. Mr E. Toomer briefly returned thanks, and an apology was made for Mr Glen, who was unavoidably absent. The unsuccessful candidates, viz., Messrs Carmichael, Atkinson, Jackson, Morris and Staples, also spoke. The Eeturning-officer said that he laid received a visit from Mr Taafe, who wished to retire from the contest, but the notice given was too short.
