Alfred Wright and Edward Malloy were committed for trial for stealing a gold watch and chain from Mrs MoKellars. Isaac Wilson, of Rotorua, contractor at Wnitara, was arrested here on a charge of embezzling a cheque for £2O. Touching the petition of Patrick O'Hara, whose sou was fined some four months since for alleged assault upon a number of Chinamen in the Domain, his Excellency the Administrator of the Government haying looked into the ease, remitted the fins and costs imposed upon Patrick O’Hara. GISBORNE, October 25. The banquet given to Mr Allen McDonald last night was a great success. About 100 persons were present, including Sir G. B. Whitmore and several Napier and Auckland visitors. Wet weather set in yesterday and it is blowing cold. The Agricultural Society held their show at Pahitshi to-day. Owing to weather there wore not many present. Two shocks of earthquake were felt this morning about four o’clock. News from the Southern Gross oil springs is very encouraging. WELLINGTON, October 26. Mr Henry Gordon, recently appointed Inspector of Mines, left for the South this afternoon to inspect the Otago goldfields.. It is expected that his visit will extend over three weeks. The Government, this morning, notified to the Council that it is their intention to take over the whole control and management of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid. Applications for the position of Resident Surgeon were to ba considered by the Council to-morrow night, but the Government have requested that the applications may be handed over to them unopened. The number of applicants for the position of resident surgeon of the Hospital was eight, thirty for that of steward, and twelve for the office of dispenser. GBEYROUTH, October 25. Poms of the directors of Langdon’s Quarts Mine and other gentlemen visited the ground the ground to-day, ami found that the reef had made into a rein of fairly solid stone, about two feet wide, with indications of still widening. The stone showed, as it has hitherto done, very good. About twenty tons of stone are now in the paddock. DUNEDIN, October 25. The Woollen Factory project for Tokomairiro hss been abandoned, owing to the country districts neglecting to support it. 8000 shares were applied for in town, but only 800 in the country. The weather has been fine to-day. bat a heavy S.W. gale has prevailed. The annual conversazione of the Young Men's Christian Association was held this evening, and was attended by about 1000 person. The Hon. T. Dlok was amongst those present. Deputations to him begin tomorrow. Another notorious character was dealt with at the police court to-day. Her name is Bridget Kane, and she is exactly level with Mary Allan, who got twelve months tor vagrancy a week or two ago, in the number of convictions, having 116 to her credit. She got two years for being a rogue and a vagabond. According to the “ Mataura Ensign” there is a doubt whether Sir Julius Vogel will visit New Zealand after all. He will be in Melbourne over the racing carnival, but as he is due home at the end of the year, it is more than likely he will return at once by one of the Orient liners. The evidence at the inquiry regarding the railway accident has been forwarded to headquarters at Wellington
