[>BBSS AgaOCTATION TBLBGBAM.] AUCKLAND, Ootober 24.

Gerald Hansen and Stephen Ward were charged at the Police Court to-day with a breach of the Gaming Act, by establishing a game of chance and by disposing of tioketg, for which money prizes were to be given. Mr Tyler appeared for the defendants, and pleaded guilty. Ward was simply a servant to Hansen, who was willing to take the responsibility upon himself. He might say, in extenuation, that although illegal, it was only fair to state that Hansen merely accepted a very modest per centago on the game. Ho might also i form the Court that amongst the patrons of the defendants' attractive table were the detoctives themsolves. Superintendent Thompson admitted Mr Tyler's statement that detectives undoubtedly were in the saloon. The defendant, somehow or other, had obtained a lioonse for his bowling table. On visiting the saloon on Saturday evening he found nearly 150 youtna in defendant's plaoe, purchasing tickets and participating in the excitement, out of whioh the defendant got a good per oentage. la one« instance a youth had been attracted to the table and lost nearly all his week's wages, and as he was the bread-winner of the family, it became a very soriouß matter to his mother. Mr Tyler said Hansen had been engaged in this particular line of business eight years, four in Australia and four here, and he had never been interfered w "h by the police before. The saloon was eavried on openly j but dow, ua he hod discovered it was illegal, ha would pack up and prooeed at once to the United States. He was fined 20s and costs.
