Patrick Noonan, contractor, was killed on Saturday by the upsetting of a crane on the now railway line from’ Bichmond to Alphinglon. ' ! ■ ' The quarantine camp at Hamilton was brpken up on Saturday, the 10th. The bedding and furnitiire were destroyed by burning. Doctor Murphy, formerly in Dunedin, died in the Ballarat Hospital on Friday. It is proposed to light the Public Library with electric light imtead of with gas in th« the evening.
Patrick Byan, charged with horsestealingin New Zealand, appeared in Court on Saturday, and was remanded, despite the protest of hit counsel that he ought not to be kept in custody for an indefinite period, pending tbo arrival of a policeman from New Zealand. Proceedings in Parliament continue devoid of interest, vary little progress being madewith business. The Assembly is principally occupied with the Railways Construction Bill.
The electric light is now in fall working at the Ellenborongh mine, Sandhurst. It wu first lighted on the 9th lost., and has b««n burning continuously ever since. It is expected that it will shortly be adopted in all the principal mines.

The Art Gallery wa* opened on Sunday for the first time. Nearly 4000 persons visited it. All ware orderly. The iron workers’ tin*.a h&s been settled, and all, or nearly all of the men hare resumed work. Intelligence from Temora states that exceptionally good gold has been found in the Barmcdan reef. Gold of so eh richness hasnevor been seen in the district. The steamer Liguria was detained on arrival in Watson’s Bay far a thorough examination by the health officer. Thomas Maloney, who was found lying: insensible in the street, died on Saturday. The evidence shows that a brutal assault had been committed. An outbreak occurred amongst the inmates in toe Magill Reformatory. The leaders wore sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. The weather is hot and dry, and destructive of the crops, and in some places the cattle were turned loose in them as useless. ADELAIDE, October 17. News has been received of the arrival sd Katherine, on the overland telegraph line, of Sanders and Johns, explorers from West Australia. They left Fitzroy on the Ist August and fallowed the Leopold waters to the bead in Leopold range, the summit of which they reached and found auriferous country on the old watershed, but no water there. The great portion, however, of the country was rooky and barren. The Natives gave them trouble on two occasions.
