A meeting was held here to-day, at which twenty-one captains of vessels now in port were present, to consider the rates for freight, upon wool, and they unanimously resolved that no wool should bo taken on board at a lower rate than id per lb, pending further instructions front owners of vessels. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, held thei» opening wool sale for the season to-day. The catalogue was a fairly representative one, and the attendance at the sale was very large, and representatives from all parts of Europe and from America were in greater numbers than at any previous sales. The bidding was animated, and a brisk competition was experienced, nearly every lot on the catalogue being’sold. A general advance of folly Id per lb was obtained for sound, well grown wools of all classes. The highest price real sod for greasy merino was Is Ijd, and for greasy crossbrodls,and for scoured merino Is 10id. The Australian land lines are intevmpted. Received October 20tb, 0.50 am. Two men, who were arrested by the police on a charge of attempting to rob the Commercial Bank of Australia at Avonel on the 6tb instant, were committed for trial to-day. 1
