WOOLSTON TOWN DISTRICT.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Woolston Town District Commissioners was held at seven o’clock last evening. Present— Messrs Hopkins (chairman), Tioknor, O’Neill, MoDiarmid, York, Attwood ond Oolee. The Chairman stated that ho had written to the Selwyn County Council, enquiring what portion of licensing foes, fee., was payable to the Woolaton district j that a reply hod been sent to Mr S. Manning re formation of roads ; that since last meeting of the Commissioners a conference had been held with some of the tramway directors respecting the tramway extension below the Steam Wharf, and that certain proposals would bo laid before the Commissioners by the secretary of the Tramway Company daring the present meeting. The works committee’s report was then read, by which it appeared that the various streets, roads, and side channels in the district had been inspected on October 9th, and the committee wag glad to report that but little work was needed thereto, and they would suggest that a laborer be employed for, say, a fortnight, filling in ruts, &c. They had also to call attention to overhanging gorso fences and gorge growing on the side roads that needed trimming and removol, and that the various property-holders bo requested _ to abate nuisances caused thereby, failing which, the work should be done, and the cost charged to each owner. The report was received and adopted, the committee being authorised to employ a laborer as suggested. Mr MoDiarmid proposed, and Mr York seconded, and it was resolved —“ That the offer of the library committee for the use of she Lower Heathcote library by the Commistion for it* meetings at 5s each meeting night be accepted,” A letter from Mr W. V. Hubbard, 0.E., offering his professional service* to the Commission, wag read and received. Mr W. Pratt, one of the directors, and Mr M. Davie, engineer to tho Tramway Company waited upon the Commission with plans and specifications for the proposed tramway extension from its present terminus on tho Perry road to the swing bridge. Mr Davie explained the various details of the plan, calling attention to tho proposed works at the narrowest part of the road where tho river encroaches, it being proposed to increase the width of same from 29 't 9in to 38ft 6in, the same to be protected by sheet piling from the action of the river. The extension will be continued on tho crown of the road as far as the wharf, from whence it will diverge to the right side of the road, at a distance of 12ft from the boundary fence of Sir O. Clifford's property. In reply to a question the chairman explained that at some future time a footpath would most probably be constructed on Bft of this space. Purthor, that when the ditch in front of tho late Captain Obailesworth's property was filled in, it would increase the width of the road at this point to a total driving width of 47ft 6in. Messrs Pratt and Davie having answered several questions, thanked tho commission for its courtesy and withdrew. Mi- McDiarmid thought the chairman deserved their thanks for the action ho had taken in this matter, and would move — “ That the Commission accept tho plans and specification submitted, and authorise the chairman to sign the same on its behalf.” Mr T. York seconded tho resolution, which was carried unanimously.

Mr O’Neill proposed, and Mr McDiarmid seconded—" That notice be given to owner* of property upon the road whore tho exitn•ion of footpath is proposed to provide pipes to lay across tho footpaths for tuo drainage of their sections, the Commission providing tho necessary labor for laying tho same.” Mr Ticknor proposed as an amendment “That tho footpath be continued no further than Dyer’s road” ; but on beingput to tho vote it was negatived, and tho original resolution carried by 4 to 1.
