[PKB FSBSI MIOOIinOK.] AUCKLAND, October 18, The bodies of the seamen (ship Ashmore) who were drowned to-day, hare not yet been recovered. The water police are searching, bat the weather is boisterous. William John Little was again brought np on a charge of bigamy, and fresh evidence adduced. He was committed for trial, bail being allowed. The Harbor Board has decided to continue the present pilot service temporarily. Of two candidates for the new service, the examiners reported that Captain McLeod had not experience in handling large ships. Captain Sainty pnt in a certificate, bat declined to submit to the examination. NAPIER, October 18.
The local Synod is now sitting. For the convenience of the members all the desks and forms were taken from the Borough Council Chamber* without the leave of that august body. When the Council met tonight members had to adjourn to the town clerk’* office, where they passed a hsarty vote of censure on the Synod. The applications for shares in the Frczsn Meat Company are several thousands in excess of the number to be allotted. WANGANUI, October 18.
Jackson’s Hone Fair attracted a large audience, Settler* being present from all part* of the district. Over 200 horse* were offered, moat of which were sold at satisfactory prices. The sale lasted six hours. For the Agricultural and Pastoral show to-morrow the entries are in excess of previous years. With fine weather the show will be a groat success. The town is full of visitors. WELLINGTON, October 18. A heavy north-west gale was blowing this morning ; no damage whatever was reported. The Stella will leave Wellington to-morrow for Taranaki and Manukau, conveying the Premier and his family to the latter place, and the Colonial Treasurer to the former. The Lord Mayor of London writes to the secretary of the local committee for the Belief of tho Persecuted Jews in Bussia, acknowledging the receipt of £3OO towards this fund. NELSON, October 18, The Motueka correspondent of the “ Colonist” write*:—“Mr Stevens, M.H.B. for Kangitiki, has visited tho district for the purpose of negotiating with some Native owners resident here for a large block of land in Collingwood district consisting of 40,000 acres. I think the block ia twentyseven miles by seven miles, and the price £IO,OOO, Mr Stevens, who represents a company as agent 'tag been *o far successful to obtain the consent of the Natives interested residing in this district, and has gone to Waitabi, Otago, accompanied by three or four Natives from here, and Mr Hursthouie, M.U.8., to obtain the consent and aignature of owners residing there. It is expected that tho Land Court will be held here shortly.” TIMABU, October 18. At tho District Court to day. Judge Ward suspended the discharge of a bankrupt named D. Malony, a tinsmith by trade, for two years, characterising bis transactions as a “ family swindle.” Heavy rain set in this evening. It is required by the crops.
