ACCIDENT TO THE WAKATU.
[PBBH &IMOOIATIOK TaiBSBAM.J PATE A, October 18,
The Wakatu, from Wellington, met with a serious mishap on entering the river this morning. She is alongside the wharf, with her hold nearly fall of water. She was signalled at nine to take the bar, on which there was 12ft of water, a westerly breeze blowing, and a moderate sea on. She crossed safely in mid-or.annel, but was oarried on to some detached blocks at the end of the breakwater, knocking a hole in her waist on the starboard side. Her engines were stopped to prevent breaking the blades of the propeller, and, by means of a staysail, she slid off. Her engines were then started at full spaed ahead, and she was beached on the hard near the wharf, in eight feet of water. The extent of her damages cannot be ascertained until low tide. She is now discharging her cargo, which is considerably damaged, also the mails. The vessel is insured for £4009 in the South British. She has a large and general cargo and a number of passengers.
