HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.

The annual sports ia connection with the Boys' High School word held to-day in Lancaster Park. The threatening sUto of the weather prevented a large attendance of the public ia the morning, but in ail other respects the sports were a great suectss, the fields being lnrge and the different ercnts well contested. There was quite a large sprinkling of visitors, who took great intoros*. in the various contests. The following are tho particulars : Long Jump (V'r Wood's prize), i). Wood (16ft lis) 1; EL R. T. M»tson (15ft lUin), 2. Three others competed. 100 Yards, under fifteen (Mrs Miller's prize); first heat. G. Forbes, 1; E. C. Papprii), 2. Five started. Won by about three yarda. Time, 13aecs. Second heit. W. H. Montgomery, 1; V. J. G. Wilkinson, 2; K. W. Walton, 3. R. G. Taiaroa, G. A. You'.Haast, and A. J. Wagner »lao started. Montgomery won easily by about fi?e yards. Mateon led Bhortly after the start and won by about six yards, the same distance separating tie second and third men. Time, 21 aeos. Second Heat. R. W- Walton, 1; G. E. Bi : hard«on, 2. Five started. Walton wos the only competitor who did not have a fall, all the others coming to grief at various stages of the race. Bichardson fell at the last hurdle but one, and Postlethwaise jußt bafore the finish, when he held second place. lime, 2iiseo. 100 Tarda, under twelve. T. B. Burt, 1 ; L. W. Appleby, 2. Seven competed. Won easily. _ 100 Tard3, over fifteen; final heat. H. Mateon, 1; A. S. Bruce, 2. Montgomery and Wilkinson also started, but the former scon gave up. There was a splendid race between Matson and Braes for first place, the former only winning by about 6in. Time, 11 2-sth sec. 440 Yards, Mr Miller's Cup ; to be won three years in succession ; 1881 won by H. Matson. Fir-t heat, A. S. Bruce, 1; H. fleywood, 2 A. Bailey and H. Matson also started. Bailey soon fell out. Matson led into the straight, when being passed by Bruce he retired, giving Heywood second place. Time, 60£aeo. Second heat, D. Wood, 1; G. Von HaaHt, 2. Postlethwaite, Taiaroa, J. L. Von Haast, B. Walton and F. Wilkinson also started. Taiaroa led at the start, but w»s soon passed by _ Wilkinson, who maintained the lead until coming into the straight, when he gave place to Wood, who won by about Byds, Von Haaat second, about the same distance in advance of Wilkinson. Time, 61£seo. Final heat, A. S. Bruce, 1; D. Wood, 2. Heywood and Von Haast also ran, but the latter soon fell out. Won by abont 10yds, Heywood an indifferent third. Time, 59eeo. Throwing the Cricket Ball. Frank Watson, 89yds Ift Bin, 1; J. Moir, 82yds Ift, 2 ; A. S. Bruce, 79yds Ift, 3. Mataon, Montgomery, Walton, and Von Haast also competed. The wind slightly favored the throwers. Putting the Weight, 161 b (Mt Moir's Priae). A. J. Wagner, 26ft llin, 1; Frank Watßon, 26ft, 2. J. Moir and W. D. Montgomery also competed. 200 Yards' Handicap (Hon. E. Richardson's Pri*s). J. Moir, 9yds, 1; A. S. Bruoe, 9yds. 2; G. A. Von Haast, 13yds, 3. A field of about twenty-five started for this race. Matson, the only scratch man, did not run. Moir won a well-contested race by about 4yds ; Von Haast a good third. Time, 235«0„ The sports ware still continuing when we went to press.
