A miner named E. W. Botting was killed at Livingstone yesterday by a fall of earth. He was working in his claim with another miner when a fall of earth partly covered him. At Qoro to-day, a boy named Bowie was run over by a train while shunting, and had both legs broken and one arm. Special meetings' of the Land Board will be held next week to determine tho subdivisions of the forty-six Otago runs to be disposed of in February next year. The murder case ha* been adjourned till to-morrow. Tha Education Board hiving asked an advance at least of £SOOO for the most pressing buildings, have received a reply from the Government that, as the vote for school buildings comes out of the loan that has yet to be raised, tha Government can at present make no advances or promises with regard to it.
The following information with regard to the running of the Union Company’s boat* will be of interest: —The Penguin is at present being fitted with new boilers and engines and improved passenger accommodation. The Waitaki has temporarily taken her place in the time table. On the return of the Rotorua, however, from Sydney, tha latter will take up the Penguin’s running until her refit is completed, after which ohe will bo placed on the Bast Coast as an extra boat. Xho recant arrival of the Omapers has allowed of the Mabinapua being permanently placed in tha running for which she was designed, and she will now make fortnightly trips between Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, and the WestOoaat port* of the South Island. The Omapere will trade regularly on the East Coast as a cargo boat, and to give special facilities to the North Island trade, the Southern Cross will run exclusively between Auckland, Gisborne, and Napier. It is anticipated that the services of these smaller boats will to a large extent relieve the through passenger steamers of coastal cargo traffic, and to ensure the summer timetable being punctually timed out. To meet the increased trade with Fiji during the summer mouths tha directors nave replac 'd the Taiaroa by the Hero, which accordingly leaves to-morrow for Levuka vis Auckland. Tho Taiaroa will a most immediately bo placed ia the Xlmaru trade, allowing tho Waitaki to resume tho service between Dunedin and Camara, for which she was originally built. In order every encouragement to tho passenger traffic, tha usual reduced fares will be adopted over all the company’s lines during tho months of December, January, and February next. At to-day’s meeting of tho Episcopalian Synod, Archdeacon Edwards moved to tha effect that in consequence of the want_ of funds the proposal to establish a theological college be deferred, but that students be sent to Christchurch. The motion was opposed by Bishop Neville, who is trying to establish the college here, and was lost. A motion was also made, expressing the desirability or a Church paper for tho colony, and was carried.

Mr Conclly, M.H.E. fer Pioton, was duly sworn in to-day as Minister of Justice, relieving Mr Dick of that office, while the latter takes over the Post Office and Telegraphs from Mr Johndon. Rooms were pre pared for Mr Ooaolly tbia afternoon, end he entered regularly on hio duties, the earliest of these being to consider the extraordinary Lon ghurit-Adams case, which io still undecided as to its ultimate remit. Air Oonollj’s appointment will provide the Government with legal assistance in the Lower House, and so remove one grievance of which much was made last session. Now that this long vexed question is settled there will be an osriy scattering of Ministers. 'i lie Premier and family go to Auckland on Tuesday by a special steamer, for a lengthened absence from the scat of Government. Major Atkinson also loaves for Wellington in a tew days.to take a holiday trip in the country, probably going to Taranaki, Mr Bryce leaves town to morrow night for the fust stige on tho overland journey to the West Coast, cn route for Auckland, to pay his long talked of visit to the King country.
