CRICKET.

The first of the series of cup matches commenced on Saturday by the Lancaster Park Club facing the Addingtor. Club on the ground of the former, and the D.O.C.C.playing the Midland Club on the Hagley Parfc'ground. Tho weather was very fine, except that towards evening the usual cold easterly wind rendered fielding rother a trial, U. 0.0.0. T MIDLAND. The former club lost the toss, and went into the field, Chapman and Boss with the ball. Buchanan and Haskell handled tbs willow, and made things rather lively to start x-lth, both of them playing a good free game, Buchanan especially making soma very goad hits. When 29 had been scored, Chapman, who wee hardly in his usual form, vat tskec off, and Ashby being put on, found his vay into Haskell’s wicket when only four mow had been made. One wicket down for 33 Ashby also bowled Watson and Strange, bolt* of whom played well for 21 and 17 respectively, and Buchanan was given entkg before when he had put together 32, quite the innings of the day. Fowie and Earner now found themselves together, and the latter, who plays a very careful game, was finally disposed of by Boss for 11. Ashby had before this, unfortunately for the U.C.0.0., been obliged to go away, which made a great difference to fcis side, as it was undoubtedly one of his day* out. Fosko and Philpot were now facing each other, and the game grew somewhat slow, b fch playing with great caution. Several buwiera were tried, with no success, and things began to look blue for the IT. 0.0.0., fer olthough runs were not coming fast, they were mounting up in a sufficiently disagreeable manner. At last the U. 0.0.0. deliverer appeared in the person of Longden, off whom both Fosrke and Philpot were caught, Fenwick securing both behind the wicket. They made respectively 28 and 33, Tho remaining wickets fell rapidly, Washer alone making a stand with 13 not out. The innings closed for a total for the Midland of 178. With about a quarter of an hour to drawing time the TJ.0.0.0. took the wicket, Milton and Higgins facing the bowling of Fuller and Baines. When time was called 13 runs had been put together with the loss of no wickets. The game will be continued next Saturday. The full scare will be given at the conclusion of the match.

LANCASTER PARK 0.0. T ADDINGTON 0.0.

This cup match was played on the Lancaster Park ground, and has resulted to far, aa was generally expected, in a gift for tbsPark Olub. The Addington won the lose, and elected to take the wicket, but could make nothing of the bowling of Frith and Wilding, and were all disposed of for the remarkably small score of 47. Of this amount Wheatley contributed 26 in very good form, and the only other approach to double figures was Jones with 9. Frith’s analysis showed seven wickets for 20, and Wilding's three wiokete for 25 runs. On Lancaster Park going to the wiekete it was coon made pretty evident that tha bowling of the adversary w»fr about to be knocked shout pretty freely. Ollivier ran up 22 and Dunlop 28, the latter being bowled off his pads. After a lull, Pocock put together a well made 38, including a leg hit for 7 and several other severe raps. Stevens’ 17, not out, was a good exhibition, and W. Frith’s 17 showed that his old form has not left him. When time was called the Park had mada 160, with nine wickets down. The score will be given at the conclusion of the match. U. 0.0.0. SECOND ELEVEN t MIDLAND SECOND ELEVEN. This match was commenced on Saturday on the Hagley Park ground, when the U. 0.0.0., who went in first, succumbed fit the email total of 37, Helmore alone making double figures with 12. Grossman and Homer bowled very effectively for the Midland. Tha Midland put together 85 for their first innings, Whiting, Hargreaves and Pokiret making 19,10, and 10 respectively. The match will be continued next Saturday. U.C.O.C. THIRD ELEVEN v MIDLAND THIRD ELEVEN. In this match, also played on the Hagley Pork ground, the Midland again got the host of it, scoring 105 for their first innings, while the U.C.0.0., with e x wickets down only, made 38. For tha Midland R. Wood made 34* Stalschmidt 15, Lodge 19, and Harper 12. In the U 0.0.0. W. Ootterill made 11, and Cocks 10. LANCASTER PARK SECOND ELEVEN V CHRIST’S COLLEGE, This match was commenced oa the Lancaster Park ground. The Second Eleven put together 118 for their first inningc, and the College 98 for nine wickets down, of which. Harold Mathias made upwards of 70. KAIAPOI U. 0.0. V WOODKND. A match was played on Saturday at Kaiapoi between the Kaiapoi United Cricket Olub and the Woodend Cricket Club, resulting in a win for the visitors, who soared 78 against 40 made by their opponents. Fleuty (19) and Nalder (16) were tho highest scorers for the Woodend Cricket- Club, th# best score on the other side being A. Pearce vtlth 14. KAIAPOI 0.0. v STANDARD O.C. A match was played between these clnfai oe Saturday on Latimer square. Ths Standard scored 68 in their first inning?, and the K. 0.0. 25 in their first, and 43 in their second innings. For Kaiapoi, G. Rowe with 18 (not out), and Horner with 18, were the highest scorers. For ths Standard, J. Tatteraall with 21, in the fecund innings, was tbs mast successful, ADDINGTON SECOND ELEVEN T BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL. A match was commenced on Saturday between the Addington second eleven and the Boys’ High School. At tbs time of drawing stumps, the former had scored 10S for the loss of eight wickets, the letter 70 in their first innings. For the A.U.0., W. Ashby 29, H. Simpson 21 (not out), A. Johnston 13, J. Brunt 11, were the principal scorers. For the Baye’ High School, we noticed Watson 20, Matson 16, and J. Tail 12, The principal faowiers being D, Wood and C. Lawrence. The match will be ooeeluded next Saturday.

TBAFFIC v LOCOMOTIVE DEPART-

MEAT. The; 1 return match between the clerks of the Traffic and Locomotive Departments of the Canterbury railways was played at Hosier Park on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in the defeat of the first mentioned. The rspreeontallves of the Locomotive Department were the first to handle the willow, and succeeded in putting together 60 runs. Their opponents then went in, but made no show against the bowling of H. Parson and Hatkins, who dismissed them all for 22 runs, only 7 being made off the bet. The Locomotive man again went to the wickets, and played out time, the scores standing Traffic 22, Locomotive 60 and 125 for nine wickete. The game was decided on the first innings. Day trundled well for the Traffic, taking 13 wickets during the game, whilst Flinders, Bf. Fareon, and Collier all batted well for the Locomotive DepartmectROTAL 0.0, T. BICHMOND 0.0. On Saturday a match between these twe clubs was played, which resulted in an easy victory for the Royal 0.0.
