OHBIBTOHUEOH. Monday, October 9. [Before J. Ollivier, 8.M., J. Aylmer, 8.M., and B. Westenra, J.P.] Drunkenness. —For this offence fines were inflicted with the usual alternatives in esses of default :—Edward Prior, who had also been guilty of indecency, ill ss; Edward Floyd (two offences, October 7th and Bth), 15a; Pat. McGinn, 10a; James Sullivan, 10a; H. F. Huwtsford, £1 ; James Edwards, £3, and three men and one woman for first offences each ss, Vagrancy. —Patrick McGinn was charged with soliciting alms. The evidence showed that under the threat of a 11 hammering ” ho had extorted 2s 6d from a man named Geo. Gallagher. He was sentenced to ha imprisoned for one month, and to be kept at hard labor. Fighting —H. W. Thornes, charged with this offence, w»e cautioned and discharged. Lunacy fbom Drink. -Thomas Beeoe was committed to Addington gaol for seven days for medical treatment. Valueless Cheque,—John Wilson was charged with obtaining a benefit by a fraudu lent representation. It appeared that on the night of October 4th he had gone into the Central Hotel, and, giving the night porter a cheque to bold, obtained a bed and some drinks. The ohequo was found to be valuelets. The Bench said if any persons were found so foolish as to give money or money’s worth on the document produced, which did not in the least resemble a good ohequo, they ought to suffer for it. The case was dismissed. The Oabbiebb’ By-Law.—William Reece was summoned for having on September 7th plysd for hire with a cart nob licensed by the City Council. Mr Garrick appeared for the Corporation ; Mr Joyce for defendant. It appeared that defendant, though using the cart nud horse in hie own business, had also carried furniture and other things for payment. After long argument as to the mervningof “plying” for hire, judgment was given for the Council, defendant being fined IDs, and ordered to pay costs, solicitor's fee, and expenses of two witness. A case against A. J, White was adjourned till 16ch October.

MihoelliAnbous. —A case against William O’Oonnor, adjourned from last week, for an infringement of the carriers’ by law, was settled by the defendant being fined 10j.— J. B. Coker and A. SUnning, for neglecting to keep lights burning on certain night* before their licensed premises, wore each fined £l.—Hugh Boyd, for refusing to shew his railway ticket to a guard when required, was fined £2 and ordered to pay expenses of one witness.—W. Howe was fined 5s for allowing a horse to wander.—B. Williamson, for causing obstruction in a thoroughfare by depositing building material, was fined sa. Maria Barklo and Mary Ann Barret were allowed one week to pay up arrears of their contribution of Is per week taoh towards the maintenance of their mother, or go to gaol at the end of that time.—Ssmuel id ill and Jas. Miller were fined each 10s, for not keeping proper closot-pano on their promises.—A O’.se against Jessie Weston, for assaulting Mary Jane Davis on September 26th, waa adjourned till October 16ib, plaintiff paying solicitor's fee and expansea. Daniel Grayter was ordered to pay 7s 6i towards the maintenance of bis wife, Elizabeth, oho • consenting to that arrangement, an order protecting her earnings being made at the same time.—M. J. Trengrcva obtained an order protecting her earnings against her husband, on the ground of his gross cruelty to her.—Wm. Turnbull, aa apprentice to J. F. Le Sueur, a tentmaker, pleaded guilty to having frequently absented himself from his work. His master not wishing to press tho charge, the boy was severely admonished and discharged on tho understanding that if tho offence was repeated he would bo severely punished.
