[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, October 9 At the Supreme Court on Saturday Thomas Gorman, for perjury, wm sentenced to two years. The South British Imnranoe Company’s half-yearly meeting was held this afternoon. The directors' report states that the income from premium, interest, and transfer fees, including the lest half-yearly balance, is £126,180, and the general expenditure £100,897. The balance to credit of profit and loss at the close of books was £25,282, from which £IO,OOO was carried to the reserve fund, and from the balance it is recommended the payment of a divided at at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum and and bonus of 2i per cent,, thus absorbing £7600. WANGANUI, October 9. Hippodamia and Dan are scratched for the Wanganui Stakes Handicap. Dan is a’so scratched for the Wanganui Hurdles. WELLINGTON, October 9.
At the Supreme Court to-day, Adams, convicted of conspiracy, was brought up for sentence, In a lengthy statement he denied his guilt, and contended that he had been found guilty on false evidence. Judge Biohmond said the case was an extraordinary one, and he intended not to make any comments upon it at present. There were certain joints requiring further consideration, and !ie would postpone his judgment. The prisoner would be admitted to bail on finding sureties for £2OO.
A breach of promise ease—Miss Sweeney v Laybouruo, Government clerk—was commenced this morning. The action is brought to recover £3OO damages. The revenue for the colony for the six month* ending September SOth is not yet complete, but will probably bo so by the middle of the week.
Messrs Dick, Bryce, and Rolkston returned to Wellington this morning. With reference to the vacant portfolio, it has transpired that Mr Wright was offered a seat in the Cabinet w<th the portfolio of Postmaster-General, but, although ho wa» quite willing to join the Government, ho would not accept any other portfolio than that of Minister of Public Works, as being the one his service* (owing to his previous tr-ining) would be moat effective in. Mr Wright would have taken that of Minister of Public Works had it been vacant. It is understood he leave* for Christchurch this afternoon. DUNEDIN, October 9 At a meeting of the creditors of Richard Dadds Thomson, a Customs officer, it appeared that the debtor wci in receipt of a salary of £l5O »-year, and was living at the rate of £SOO. He had incurred a number of debt* without any attempt to settle them. Mr James Duncan was appointed trustee, and was instructed to represent these facts to the Government.
A most successful meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association is promised. Every district in Otago will be represented. At the City Court, Pierce Butler and Patrick Gately were each fined 40i and costs, or a month’s imprisonment, for illegally catching trout.
In the totalisator case, the Magistrate gave judgment for the amount paid into Court, bolding that Gocdison and the other five investors were only entitled to one-sixth each of the amount registered.
