In reply to a deputation of clergymen re tiie Contagious Diseases Aot, the Mayor said he would not be willing to stay its coming into operation. Captain Hargreaves of the steamer Osromandei was seriously injured through the capsiza of a vehicle which is believed to have passed over him. The Auckland married women's petition to the Mayor and Council against tho Contagious Diseases Act has 1160 signatures. It is to be presented by Drs. Willis and Kenderdin. The thoroughbred mares from Canterbury were landed by the Hawea in fine condition, and to the satisfaction of the manager of the Stud Company. They wer? taken to the Sylvia Park establishment. B. E. M'lvor, agricultural lecturer and chemist, makes a tour of the Waikato. The Supreme Court session opined at Auckland yesterday. Judge Gillies, in his charge to the Grand Jury, said the oharga was a light one. There were eighteen prisoners charged with twenty-four offences, none of which was of an aggravated character. Th-.:rn-'s Binnie pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing from the parson, and was sentenced to one year'e imprisonment on eaoh offence, tho santenoes to run concurrently ; William Brownlie, for forgery, was sentenced to eighteen months ; Bobert Marsh, for burglary, s'x oharges, to throe years.
WELLINGTON, Ootobsr 2. The comet was seen this morning to great advantage, although displaying marked diminution in size and brilliancy. The Hon. Roll eat on has returned from the South, and leaves for Napier on Wednesday, where ho will meet Mr Bryoe. DONEDIN, Ootober 2 The Hon. Mr Johnston, Minister of Public Works, is expected here on Wednesday. At the meeting of the High School Board of Governors to-day, Mr George Gray Ruscell wrote intimating that he had decided to give to the Board the sum of £IOOO to bo invested for the purpose of founding a scholarship or scholarships at the Otago University. There were oertain conditions in connection with the gift, one being that tho fund be called the " George Gray Russell scholarship fund," and that the scholarships or scholr.r ships founded under it, be open only to students at the University who have attended either the Boys' or Girls' High school for at least one school year immediately preceding the examination. The meeting instructed the chairman to thankfully acknowledge Mr Russell's hand jome gift. The sheep assessment coll noted to-day at Dunedin for Otago, irrespective of Southland, was over £19,000. The following director* have bsen added to the Provisional Board of the Equitable Insurance Association : Dunedin James Finoh (of J. Finoh and Co.), James Gray (af Beid and Gray), and Andrew Thomson (of Thomson Bros., Port Chalmers. Also, to the Auckland Board—H. F. Anderson, H. P. Barber, J. M. The sanitary committee have recommended the City Council to erect a fever hospital. The totalisator dispute at the Hunt Club Stoop]eohase is, after all, to come before the Court. One of tho six investors has seed for the dividend amongst the three, as registered. In the Dunedin Supremo Court yesterday, the Grand Jury found true bills in all the cases with which they dealt, including that of Beattie for the murder of Mrs Adams at Papakaio. For embezzlement of the Union Steamship Company's funds, Edwin Mario*-, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three years' penal servitude. Isabella Young, who pleaded guilty to wounding Jessie Wood, was sentenced to six months. William Patrick Sharkey, a youth of sixteen, employed on a farm, who had coolly walked off with his employer's horse and buggy, pleaded guilty to the theft of the horse, and received six months' imprisonment. John Patrick Gassy was oharged with stealing a horse, saddle and bridle at Arrowtown. There was a presumption that he had committed the act ac a drunken freak, and the jury found him net guilty. John Maddon, John Mason, and James Hartley were charged with stealing £2O from Alexander Leckie at the Hunt Ciub races. The jury found the threo guilty, bat recommendod Mason to the leniency of tho Court. Sentence was deferred. The Papakaio murder case will be heard on Tuesday. No true bill was found in the case of Thomas McGill, oharged with anon in tho arcade. There are thirty-seven witnesses in the murder case. TIMABU, Octobers. A smart shock of earthquake has been felt at Timaru- and various parts of the district at 10.45 last night.
The Customs revenue collected at Timam for the Septembsr month was £2537 15s 2i, as against £1795 43 53. for the oarrespondug month last year. INVERCARGILL, Ootober 2. A meeting of oitizens wob held to-night to consider what steps should bo taken in the matter of the csiertiona made by the eorresIpondent of the "Western Star" re the alleged maltreatment of pationte in the Southland Hospital. There was a strong feeling that no notice should be taken of nn anonymous letter, bnt ultimately it was decided that the Government be asked to appoint a Commission to inquire into the allegations as the only means of restoring oonfidenoe in the institution. The Permanent Building, Loan and Investment Society, at their annual meeting, this evening, passed a resolution ta wind up the Booiety and to dispose of the assets and liabilities to the proposed Southern Finance, Loan, and Agency Company of New Zealand, which ii about to be floated, with a oapital of .£IOO,OOO, The proposed directors of the company are the Hon. Win. Wood, Messrs M. B. Soandrett (town clerk), Wm. Craig, Henry Wilson (of Cowper and Wilson), Alex. Cross (of Aitkon, Croz.T atid Co.), J. T. Martin, W. J. Moffett, and X. Perkins. It was rnmored to-day that the Ministerial vacancy had at lant been filled up, bnt although a long Cabinet meeting was held this morning, I am positively informed that nothing was decided in this direction, and that the matter will not be finally settled for a day or t^o. Mr Bollsston returned yesterday from the South, and leaves again on Wednesday for Napier, where he will meet Mr Bryco. Mr Bollestoa will then return to Wellington at once, and he is not expected to be absent more than a few days. Mr Bryoe proceeds to Auckland to meet Tawhaio and the King Natives. The Government have been frightfully worried for some time past by being flooded with olamoroua petitions for copies of the new Aots whioh wers passed during tha late session, and are now in force. The Government printers hava bean using every possible exertion, but hesve not yet bee a able to finish the work, owing to the enormous bulk of the statutes of 1832, whioh extend over between 900 and 1600 pages. It was proposed to issue two volumse, but than another diffiouity arose, it being found that another week or two would bo taken in doing the extia binding, and so muoh ext ra delay would be oooseioned. Mesnwhila tho clamors for copies of the Aots continue unabated, and at laat in desperation it has boon resolved to print the Acts in two volumes, with separate indexes, bat to enclose the two in a single temporary cover, leaving recipients of oopiea to bind in two volumes if they please. This course having bson adopted, it is hoped that the complete sets of Acta will be able to be issued in ten days' time.
