ASHBURTON HORSE PARADE.
The annual parade of entire hones, held under the auspices of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, took place on Saturday, on the Ashburton Show Grounds. The number of entries was not so large so last year, fifteen only appearing on the programme as against twenty-three on the previous occasion. Of those entered, the draught horse Muir Lad and the thoroughbred Tribune, by Traducer, failed to put in an appearance. Mr Thomas’ Commander, omitted from the catalogue by mistake, was shown, the total number on the ground being fourteen only. The class for draught horses was represented by six, the first being Mr S. Wood’s Heather Jock, 6 yrs, by Major out of an imported mare. Heather Jock is an exceedingly well-proportioned horse, as notive as a pony, and should produce good stock either for sale or work. He is a well known horse, has been in work all the winter, and is at present in very fair condition. A two.year-old colt by him was sold in the district a few weeks ago for £S3. The next was Mr Biggs’ Bonnie Scotland, by Sir Walter Scott, Bonnie Scotland is a dark dapple bay, stands 17 hands, is possessed of four good lege, and is very sound on his feet. He has been in work all the winter, and is at present a little out of condition. Next in order was Diok Turpin, a bay horse with white points. Lick Turpin is a well-known horse, and ns a yearling took first prize at Ellesmere. Ho also took first prize as a two-year-old in Christchurch, and as a three-year-old took the first prize at the Timarn Show, as well as the champion oup for the best entire on the ground. He is still a good active horse, bnx has not grown much since a three-year-old, and has not been shown since a Tour-year-old. Kelvin, a four-year-old, the property of Mr J. Gilmonr, is new to the district. He is a bay horse, by Prince Royal out of Bess. By the load of beef he at present carries Kelvin shows his sire’s constitution. He is a grand looking horse, but a little too fat. Prince Royal's stack baa been taking a great n amber of prizes of late, and from Kelvin’s general appearance he should find favour with the farmers in the district ho is appointed to travel. Mr W. T. Smith’s Pretender, by Prinoa Ob arlie, is a dark dapple bay, big, upstanding horse, possessing good clean bone and great muscle. He is well inpwn in the Mount Somers district, and his
stock hf.g been turning out well, Mr S Thomas’ Commander is a bright bay, 5 yra, by Hir Colin Campbell. He took second prize at the last Ashburton show. <te is » good thick set horss, and has developed greatly since last year. His class are at present the most saleable in the market. Mr L. Morkoy’s Python heads the list in thoroughbreds, and was the beat looking horse on the ground. Python is by Kyoglo, dam Nutout. He is a dark bay with black points. He has a game looking head, with th" rook well let in the shoulder, and is well up in the wether j bis back ribs are well let down, and be has good loins. He ia short in the cannon, his back tendons are like bare of iron, and he stands on fonr splendid fort. His breeding is undeniable, and from his make and shape there is little room left for surprise at his producing good performers. Ho is an Australian brad horaa, and is. at present new to the Ashburton district. Python is the sire of Dr. Eoss’ Comet, the winoer of the Ladies’ Purse at the Geraldine meeting on Friday. Messrs Friedlandor Bros. ’ brown horse Yono came next. Veno is by Barbarian dam Flora, and from his breeding and appearance should get good stock. Young Nobleman (belonging to the same owners) appeared on the programme amongst the thoroughbreds ; this, however, was a mistake, as he should have been classed as a carriage horse. He is a dark bay with black points, and is by old Nobleman ont of an imported mare. Messrs Wilkin and Carter’s Young Knottingly, by Knottingly, dam Beauty by Traduoer, is a well-proportioned horse, and is supported by fonr good legs and sound feet. He is a brows horse of splendid color, and should produce good stock. Liberal, a oheenut horse, by Messenger, is also the property of Messrs Wilkin and Carter. He is well-known in the district, and hia stock are turning oat well. Messrs Matson, Cox and Co.’s Oakgrovo is a fine upstanding powerful looking horse. He is four years old, and is one of the trotters recently imported from America. He is, of course, new to the district, and his career will be watched with special interest, Mr T. Taylor’s To Kooti, by Traitor, also made his first appearance at the Ashburton parade. He is. however, well-known, and needs but little description. He is a throe-year-old ohesnut, well developed for bis age, and is in good condition. The last on the programme was Messrs Carter and Muir’s wellknown Dexter, by Talisman, dam Gentle Annie. He has plenty of substance, and is well adapted for producing weight carrying hacks and carriage horses. Though some of the old horses were missed from the parade on Saturday, and the numbers on exhibition less than that of last year, those shown were a very creditable lot, and the quality of the show quite equal to those of previous seasons.
