At the suggestion of Mr Ocgtin, the rraiarks raa’o tv Dr. Cr.inpb-'ll (the lute president) at the hist general meeting of the society, as reported iu the Psebj, were easel. MrOogar, after referring to the loss which Use society had sustained through the death of Dr, Campbell, and to the value of that gentleman’s services to the cause of angling, expressed a hope that the suggestion of Dr. Campbell, that the season should ta from the Ist November to the 30th April, would be adopted. She annual report was read and adopted. It showed that after paying all working expentea the balance in hand to date ouiountod Da £3 11s 6i. With a view to increasing the number of members the annual subscription Jxsd been reduced to ss. The election of officer* for the ensuing year was then proceeded with and resulted as follows: —President—the Bov. J. B. Fergusson; vice-president, Mr W. 8. Cooke j secretary and treasurer—Mr McWilliams ; com dittos—Messrs B. Searell, Oogan, Hunt, Cunningham, Wood, Thornton, and Martin. Mr Oogan thought it should be an instruction to the committee to see if arrangements could bo mado with private owners for the privilege of fishing on payment of a nominal yearly rental. Mr Cooke said the subject was mooted before, but on euoh a proposal being made the Booioly was snubbed. The committee were instructed to obtain information on the subject. Mr Cooke suggested that the society should communicate with other kindred institutions m the colony, with the view of inducing the Government to fix the flshingssason definitely, aay from the Ist October to the 3l»t March, and to fix a uniform license fee for the whole colony. Although the Bill on this subject wss ■helved last session, there would no doubt be an attempt to pass It again next year. The present arrangement in regard to the fauna of accuses was most unsatisfactory. Mr Oogan thought action should be deferred unr.il after the end of the approaching season, when the society would be larger and in a better position to make some representation to the Government.
Mr Searell moved —“That the secretary be instructed to write to the different fishing societies in New Zealand, with the view of obtaining united action-with respect to the annual fee to be charged and the date of the commencement and of the termination of the . fishing season, and also the date when intending fishermen could obtain their isoer-oss.” Mr Cooke seconded the motion, which was carried after some discussion. On the motion of Mr Searell it was resolved—“ That the society recommend that the annual fee lor fishing all over the colony should be £1; that the season throughout New Zealand should be from the let October to the 31st March; that intending fishers should be able to obtain their licenses at least a week before the opening of the SOBBOCU*’ Mr McWilliams brought under the notice o£ the meeting an application which had bean mode to the Acclimatisation Society for a license to fish with a net in Lake Heron, with a view of celling the trout in the market. Ha understood that the Acclimatisation Society would like to have an expression of Opinion on the subject. After some discussion, it was resolved, on Che motion of Mr Searell—“ That, in the •pinion of the committee it is undesirable to give permission to any body or bodies to eatoh trout by means of netting.” This concluded the business, and the meeting adjourned.
