Phu Customs duties collected at Christchurch on Saturday, September 23rd, were as follows i—Spirits, £BO 19s 4d; sugar, £3 12s; tn» J6ll 4a; ad valorem, .£l2B 13s. Totsl, £823 8a 4d. GR AIN AND PRODUCE. Basinets continues exceedingly quiet, and is not likely to early improve- Wheat is offering xa small parcels, and finds buyers at 4a 6d, f.o.b , for good samples, and somewhat lower rates for medium. The continued decline in values in Europe is doubtless caused by the uniformly good wheat crop in America, which ipprnm. from latest accounts, to be threshing aateven better than was anticipated, although, ifVo our own, the quality is not at all equal to that of the previous year. The rates of freight from Pacific ports are from 20s to 30a per ton lawer than they were twelve months ago, so that ika actual difference in return to the wheat grower ii sot so great as it might otherwise have been. Flour -Trade is very quiet at £lO to £ll 10b, and only one or two iwiiu doing anything like a fair business. _ Oats nova- off slowly at 2s 6d to 3s, according to quality- The Australian markets appear to bo tiept low by heavy shipments from southern aorta. A fair demand exists for good samples of barley at 4a 6d, bat medium and inferior lots ara neglected and can only bo moved at feeding rates. Grass seed is very dull, as the season is now virtually over. Stocks are said to be large. Potatoes are firm at 45a at country-stations, bnt the export demand is not large. Bntter is dull of sale and declining, bnt good cheese are wanted at Bd. Hama and bacon are unaltered at 7£d toßd. ~s COEN EXCHANGE. Report for the week ending Friday evening. Use 22ad September:— No change has taken place in the state of the market daring- the week_ tfipt has passed; nothing has transpired which calls for special comment. Business continues in the same torpid condition. Wheat—An easier tone has to be recorded week, growers having had to accept lower ratee, in consequence of the local demand being exceedingly limited. Good milling quality cannot be quot'd at over 4s 6d per bushel, delivered in Christohuroh; shipping parcels of first rate quality, 4s lOd to 5s per bushel, f.o b ; second quality, 4s 2d to 4s 4d per bushel; chick wheat, 3s 6d to 3s 9d per bnahel; seed parcels, Sb 3d to 5s 4d per bushel. Oats—Good milling samples, 3s 3d to 3s 4d per bushel; feed, 3s Id to 3s 2d Barley—Prime malting samples are still inquired for, and range from 4s 7d to 5s per bnahel- Second class malting is not much sought after. Prices nominal. Feed quality, Ss 4d to 3s 7d per bushel f o.b. Grass Seed—The unusually large quantity on offer has had the effect of still further depreciating values. There are varjr few buyers in the market, and the se - son being already well advanced, renders sales difficult to effect. First doss samples may be quoted at from 4i 6d to 4a 9d per bushel; indifferently cleaned according §3 sample. Potatoes —Little or no business has been transacted during the week, Vnyera and sellers equally holding aloof in the absence of actual transactions. Approximate values only can be given—4os to 42s 6d at country stations. Peas and Beans —Tie farmer, according to sorts and to quality, range from 4a to 5s per bushel; the latter, 4s to 4s 2d f.0.b.; hand threshed, 4a 9d per bushel. Cheese and Butter—The former, 8d to SJd per lb ; the latter, la to Is 2d.
