DRAINAGE BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the ' Ohriitchuroh District Drainage Board was ' held at 230 thia day. Present Mesirg L ' Harper (chairman), W. Vinoent, S.|Manning, A. Ash worth, W. White, junr,, J.E. Parker, and Dr. Doyle. A deputation, consisting of Messrs G-reig and ' others, waited on the Board respecting the state of Jackson's Greek, between the Drain road and St. Asaph street, stating that they had sent in petitions in the matter. The outlet into the drain was of little use, owing to the water of ' the drain backing up. The drain is a continual nuisance to the neighborhood. A promise had been made by the Board that the ' matter should be set right so soon as the Drain road was formed, but this had not been done. All the residents in the vicinity, except one person, bad signed the petition in the matter. It was also productive of siokness in the locality, and Dr. Irving had expressed the opinion that the drain affeoted the neighborhood injuriously. It only benefited two residents, and seriously affeoted all the rest. It was agreed to sea to the matter, and the deputation having thanked the Board, withdrew. The esgineer's report was read as follows: 1. The oost of deepening and cleaning that portion of Daniel's drain, in connection with whioh Messrs Low and Qreig waitsd on the Board at the last masting, will be £ i per chain. (The length as stated by them i 3 15 chaias—the map shows 30 chains). 2. He account from Avon Road Board, for expenses incurred in fencing Philpot's drain (£2 7a 9(1). It is recommended that, the same ba paid. 3. Letter from Mr Broughton, calling attention to the state of the drain near his property in Merivale lane. This matter has been attended to. 4. Letter fr om E. Piper and others, residents in the neighborhood of Piper's lane, off Waltham road, referring to the drainage of the locality. A gnlly is necessary to take the watar of the side gutters into the old stone drain. This lane is under water in wet weather. 5. Letter from Mr James Coombs, claiming the sum of £56 for the permanent occupation of part of his section (E.S. 41) by the Bingsland main sewer, extending from Swan's ro»d to Togel street. Tt is recommended that a strip 570 links by 15 links be acquired by the Board in freehold. Thia is valued at .£OOO per acre, and oontains 1368 perches (subject to survey), making the amount of compensation equal to .£sl.
